Sometimes what the topic inspires is a smart-ass comment.  Guilty right here.  I'm just wired that way.  There is a wide canyon between that, and intentionally dragging a topic into nonsense.  Threads drift, sometimes in neat ways, sometimes into a small group going on for pages about a certain aspect of a reply that bears little to do with the what the OP intended.  Quite frankly, it pisses me off when I see anything that catches the peanut gallery's attention turned into mush, just because they figure they can.  "Nude jello wrestling???"  Makes me want to administer a jello enema, followed by 100 with the carbon fiber cane.

I had this crisis of bad topics quite a while back.  Mostly, I stick to the tremendous diversity of thought and perspective we get in Off-Topic.

You want good topics?  Start some.

i'm not above derailing idiotic threads in the direction of pointless banter,

And that's a good chunk of the problem.  What could be an interesting topic, what could be dragged by its bootstraps into something decent, gets hijacked by (self-censored) who think they are being cute.

Great example would be the topic Gris posted a couple weeks back on terraforming.  First reply was someone who didn't find it personally compelling shrieking "URANUS!!!    Hehehehehe!!!!"

There is a whole section for Random Stupidity, it shouldn't be the whole board.  And who the fuck declared you the arbiter of what is idiotic?  Please answer that, Anna.  I'm not being rhetorical.

Isn't it easier to be critical, taunt, tease, laugh, joke
and ridicule, than to create and maintain interesting and thoughful
threads?

Not if it's good critical, taunting, teasing, laughing, joking and ridiculous comedy.

WHY? WHY?

Well domiguy is now gone from the forums so that got rid of quite a bit of the intellectual banter.

I dont spend heaps of time in here but I notice some familiar faces disappear and it makes me feel kind of sad, like, "Hey where is so and so? I miss them."

I've noticed the same thing. I'm also noticing more 'threads from the past'. I'm posting less, and now hesitate more over whether to post an OP, as some tend to be a bit like launching the Titanic.

MadRabbit,
Sadly i think i've been experiencing some of what You've described here.  In the past, i knew if  was feeling stressed or challenged or whatever, i could log onto collar me (at least in the General BDSM or off topic portion) and be intellectually stimulated, challenged, or hell even confronted. It seems like ages since i've experienced any of those things here. i've attempted to make some threads which i thought would be throught provoking, but alas turned into what a deceitful wench i am.

hmm. Gosh I truly thought it was "me".

Where to start?

Well some of our interesting regulars are moderated.  This slows the ebb and flow of the thought process. Some of those posts missed.

We hit a peak maybe 6-8 months ago.

Some of the topics have in fact been reduced down to the top 20 stories of the week.  Almost predcitable.

We had some very good, mind picking threads - just browse in the archive.

I dont know who gets told by a mod- I know I have been told a number of items over the time I been here.  One of which - not to post things simply as to do a link- unless I have something to say.
I dont always know all the etiquate of online boards.... so Ill leave that up to the experts.

Summer the net slows down. All my computers are slower.   When school starts it should go faster.  Likewise there are more clowns when school is out...  so the mods are busier.

For myself I spend LESS time online during nice weather.  I am out enjoying the outdoors...

I wish we could get back into the deep thought provoking threads.  But maybe the collar me crowd has reached its peak and we are a tired old horse so to go to the glue factory.  Or maybe folks are too afraid to post.  Or maybe some other venue has "it" and others have moved on.

So we all - if this were a group marriage, we would have the 7 year ich...

Ill make us  some jello.

It is indeed so much easier to be a critic, than to actually
help change or enhance the situation.

InkedMaster and I were just talking about this very subject this morning.  He has pretty much stopped offering his opinions or comments except in the Humor section.  Lately I find myself typing a response and then just hitting "cancel" because I think "it doesn't matter, my opinion doesn't matter and it's all just going off to the ether anyway."

But it seems to go in cycles and I'm sure there's going to be good intellectual discourse again soon.  I'm just not sure I'm going to be contributing when that cycle returns.

Well, I value your opinion, eyesopened.  You caught me in an error just a couple days ago!

I do that frequently, esp. if I feel the thread is going to turn into a big flame-war.

as far as the OP, I think it's just part of that circle of life thing...
