Im sorry...but it is hard not to find amusement in this.....  hehe

thishereboi -> RE: Nigerian conned (7/15/2008 4:44:11 AM)

I am not sure why you find this amusing. Some kid got screwed out of a lot of cash and was stranded. It shouldn't matter where he is from, I think it is sad anytime a kid gets screwed.

RCdc -> RE: Nigerian conned (7/15/2008 4:47:52 AM)

Just what is so funny?  They are people being conned and stranded and some are incredibly young and vulnerable.

pahunkboy -> RE: Nigerian conned (7/15/2008 4:55:35 AM)

It is amusing to me since I have gotten dozens of these "offers".   Including a paper check of $53,000.

sula -> RE: Nigerian conned (7/15/2008 4:55:59 AM)

They preyed on his hopes and dreams...i don't see what's amusing about that.

So - just because they are nigerian, it's funny?
Some of these are as young as twelve????  What on earth is funny about conning and preying on children?

They are people, no more - no less.

hmm.   I wont contribute to a fund for the young man.   lol

DomAviator -> RE: Nigerian conned (7/15/2008 5:26:20 AM)

I gotta say I find this funny as well. The Nigerians are such notorious con artists with their fake checks and Nigerian 419 scams that the US Secret Service has opened a special hotline for them... I read somewhere that the 419 scam is like the #3 industry in Nigeria. Thus it is kind of funny to see them targeted. Its newsworthy in a "Man Bites Dog" or "Swimmer Attacks Shark" kind of way...

popeye1250 -> RE: Nigerian conned (7/15/2008 7:00:20 AM)

One of my e-mail accounts is closed for about 20 hours a day because of Nigerian scammers taking it over.
Yahoo and AOL and the other big sites need to cut communications with Africa.
Nothing good ever comes out of Africa on the internet.
I don't know why some people feel "sorry" for Africans, you could pour a trillion dollars/ pounds/ euros into africa and there'd be no changes.
I just don't want my Taxdollars involved over there!
Feel "sorry" for Africa? Go find your own checkbook but stay away from mine!

RCdc -> RE: Nigerian conned (7/15/2008 7:49:41 AM)

This is Darcy

Just because this guy is Nigerian doesn't make the fact that he was preyed on by unscrupulous con artists any less odious than if your grandmother had been robbed of her life savings.

To generalise that all Nigerians are "such notorious con artists with their fake checks and Nigerian 419 scams" is no different to generalising that all Texans are as moronic as George W Bush, that all Irish people are stupid navvys, that all Scottish people are alcoholic wife-beaters, that all Catholic priests secretly molest young children, and that all Americans are fat, loud and obnoxious.

You could also use the analogy that since the US has been been indisciminantly bombing buildings and civilians in Iraq and Afghanistan that it was hilarious that the World Trade Towers were destroyed as a result of its foreign policy. Not so funny when it's closer to home, is it?

RCdc -> RE: Nigerian conned (7/15/2008 7:52:54 AM)

I don't feel 'sorry' for Africa.  Who said anyone did? Way to go to manipulate peoples words.  You should be a politian.  You have the same agenda.
I do feel sorry for racist bigots, but that is another thread entirely.

There is a HUGE difference in being stupid enough to get as far as receiving a crappy check from a scammer, or being greedy enough to actually think that you will get something for nothing, or some aging man satisfying their loins with some fake african princess, to youngsters sending the only cash they have, with the hope of making their life better and improving the life for the people they support.

I don't see what is so funny about abusing children - but I am sure y'all get your kicks somehow.

It doesn't cost a thing to show a little human decency. Those who find this funny should be ashamed of themselves. Really ...

Darcy, the thing is I just don't "care" about Nigerians.
Fuck 'em!
Scammers or no.

Termyn8or -> RE: Nigerian conned (7/15/2008 7:55:35 AM)

It is like "Man bites dog", but not really humorous.

And actually there are con artists all over the world, and this kid didn't really get it so bad. Many people have been scammed alot worse and lost alot more. A month's wages ? Try losing your freedom.

Yes, every day young Women are scammed by these supposed modeling agencies. They don't even get the red flag of "money up front". They are told of how actors or models are needed in such and such country, and without even having to pay they are lured to a foreign country and sold into white slavery. Forced to work in sex clubs or whatever they call them for little or no pay, and actually held captive. Many are never heard from again. The white slavers are simply looking for fresh meat for their prostitution operations.

The kid in Nigeria is lucky he is not a female hot little tight thing, or he might be part of the "dark meat" selection in one of these clubs, which exist in many places in the world. Tell you what, if I were to fall for this bullshit, I would rather lose money than my freedom. What there is of it, I add because of my political views. But I am not held captive by anything but my own desires.

So the story does have the appeal of a car wreck, or like man bites dog.

That is one thing alot of people need to learn, before engaging in something, especially involving foreign travel, speak to the principles involved. Let's say I get a scam going. Send all these emails to Nigerians claiming to be able to get them in the NFL. They could live in America, make alot of money and live like a rock star. Bet I could make some money, just leave their ass stranded in NYC somewhere.

If this Nigerian kid was actually a scammer, I would laugh with you all, all the way to the bank, the bar, everywhere. To scam a scammer is a very worthy endevor. Should be doable as well. Most scammers look for people who want something for nothing, but the scammer himself does not realize that he is vulnerable for that exact reason. I have been tempted to try it, really. Don't really have a game plan though because I do not occupy my mind with it.

This kid was scammed by some of the dirtier, filthier ones. They preyed on his ambitions, like the white slavers do. But he was lucky, and did get home. In some parts of the world he could've been sold into a labor camp. They make it look like an arrest, and sometimes it actually is, as the government is in on it.

The world is a very dangerous place these days. Oh wait, it always was.

Twilight, sorry but I'm not "politically correct."
And as for "human decency" where are these people's *governments*?
Those countries are fucked up because they don't have "The Rule of Law" and all the money in the world isn't going to change anything in them until they do!
Why are we in the West always supposed to have "human decency" to show to people in foreign countries?
People in Africa and on other continents need to stop looking to the West for handouts and start taking care of their own people.
The "U.N." has poured in hundreds of billions of dollars/ pounds/ euros into Africa over the last 50 years and most of it has been stollen!
Look at the names/ countries of property owners on the French Riviera and other wealthy areas, *that's* where the money goes!
And, the same for the Mercedes Benz dealers!
And all kinds of other luxury goods!
I don't want to play the game anymore!

They speak very highly of you, too, Popeye. [;)]

But seriously, I do empathise with your point of view - there are many people I don't care for - it's the fact that the scammers won again with this one that ires me, not the nationality of their victim(s).

I'm of the opinion that very bad things should happen to bad people, and scammers fall into that catgory in my book.

RCdc -> RE: Nigerian conned (7/15/2008 8:20:19 AM)

Again ever the political blahblahblah.  Bravo!
Where does 'giving money to africa' come into it?
And sure you can pretend its all about not being PC.  It's got nothing to do with PC.  It's called racism.  There is a difference.  Please don't pretend it's easy to hide behind the whole pc crap.

I feel bad for the kid.. following his dream and screwed over by scammers.  And his family got screwed too, since it was his fathers money that was taken... who knows what sacrifices were made for the kid to do this? *sigh*

anguisette22 -> RE: Nigerian conned (7/15/2008 9:06:31 AM)

If I lost a month's wages, I really don't know what would happen to me. I'd be evicted, have no food, nowhere to sleep...and I live in the US! Imagine how much worse it would be if I had a family and lived in Nigeria.

This isn't about Europeans/Americans vs Nigerians; it's about scammers vs. victims. There's really nothing funny about this situation.
