slvemike4u -> Rangel's 4 rent stabilized apartments (7/11/2008 9:45:22 AM)

The New York Times ran a story today which shows Rep.Charles Rangel is enjoying four rent-stabilized apartments ,three of which are adjecent units one of which, in conflict with the requirement of primary residence use,he  set up as an office.The story goes on to say that in total he is paying a paltry $3,894 per month in total for the 4 apt's..Market-rate in this building would be closer to $8,000 .The story goes on to say Mr.Rangel is unusually quiet when it comes to landlord issues concerning Olnick Organization,the owner of the property.New York City like most major cities in America has a severe housing shortage for low and moderate income families Rep.Rangel refused comment on the story...this smells bad  ...( sorry I can't provide the link to the story ,my computer skills suck)

[it's really easy, Mike - simply copy and cut the website address from the toolbar, then paste it into the email and it becomes a link.]

Anyway ...

The article says: "Members of Congress, like other top federal officials, are prohibited from received any gift or gratuity, including a below market rent on an apartment."

Rangel is the chairman of the House Ways & Means Commitee. This definitely smells of impropriety and an investigation into his dealings should be undertaken.

Thank You for the attempt to help a computer illiterate such as myself...but I am such a cro-magnum man I actually pick up the Times with my morning cup of coffee and read the paper...I know I'm hopelessly outdated and a dying breed to boot...but seriously thank just the same..Now back on point...this smacks of special favors for special people doesn't it...and in my opinion till the electorate start demanding accountability from elected officials ,no matter which side of the aisle they be on,we will all keep getting screwed

NeedingMore220 -> RE: Rangel's 4 rent stabilized apartments (7/11/2008 10:53:56 AM)

You're welcome ...

Personally, I'm getting tired and worn out.  I can't muster up the indignity needed to demand anything of the idiots we elect into congress, regardless of what side of the political sphere they are on.  (And this is coming from someone who detests Rangel.)

Generally I go in and vote for the party that represents my POV most.  Sometimes I vote for a person, but that is getting more rare.  Here in NJ we have such a huge amount of corruption and wasted money and idiots in charge that it's demoralizing, truly.  When I see it on the national scale, it's just as bad.

Neither of the presidential candidates interest me - both have negatives which prohibit my voting for either of them.  The third party candidates haven't got a chance.

I almos feel like saying that we're going to hell in a handbasket ... BUT what holds me back from that is the fact that this has been said about society at about every point in our history.  Someone somewhere held no hope for the country - doomsday was coming.  And it never arrived.  So, I figure this too will turn around.

I don't think it will have much to do with who's in power, so much as the people who live here, quietly raising their families, and doing what they can to not only get by but to be happy and thrive.

Thadius -> RE: Rangel's 4 rent stabilized apartments (7/11/2008 1:31:23 PM)

Rangel did provide some comments on the matter.

http://www.politico.com/blogs/thecrypt/0708/Rangel_hits_back_at_NYT_on_apartment_story.html

There is nobody to start the investigation, the committee to do so still hasn't been put in place, even though the new rules were passed in March. Also note that the new rules state that no new investigations may be started within 60 days of an election, which leaves roughly 7 weeks.  I can think of a few members of congress and the senate that are glad about the foot dragging.

velvetears -> RE: Rangel's 4 rent stabilized apartments (7/11/2008 1:42:43 PM)

i wish i still had my rent stabilized apartment, my rent would be prolly around 500 a month for a one bedroom right now.  my aunt had one next to a trump building, she was paying 168 a month before she died.   Every year angry landlords and tenants g et together and battle about rent stabilization - landlords have tried every which way to abolish it, but that will never happen.

slvemike4u -> RE: Rangel's 4 rent stabilized apartments (7/11/2008 1:43:15 PM)

Thanks for the link Thadius,got to say he can tap dance with the best of them .Particulary liked his constant mentioning of raising his kids and his grandchildren visiting ...nothing like the picture of little ones scampering around to divert from the essence of the story...he says he pays the maximum,but doesn't quote figures,he downplays the size of but The Times mention square-footage ,this is a large living area by New York standards and than he neatly sidesteps the contravention of his using a rent-stabilized apartment as office space...with the justification that others do it....just prove You don't have to be a Republican to have a slippery grasp on ethics(though that should go without saying ,neither party have a monopoly on sleaze bags)

cjan -> RE: Rangel's 4 rent stabilized apartments (7/11/2008 1:44:53 PM)

It's the system that is corrupt. Try getting elected to any high office or Congress without playing ball with the money boys. It ain't gonna happen. That's why ranting and raving about individuals is futile. The system needs to be changed to allow for publicly funded campaigns and elections.

Charlie Rangel is a decent guy that does a lot of good. He also knows that he has to play ball with certain realities. Yes, the system corrupts everyone who participates in it, even those, like CR, who make compromises in order to be able to have influence in matters.

Much of what You say is true CJ,but good guy or not ,corrupt system or not..when these things come to the public's attention ,we must demand accountability...Now in the big picture some might say this doesn't amount to much but it reeks of special privlidges and is rotten to the core

cjan -> RE: Rangel's 4 rent stabilized apartments (7/11/2008 4:12:34 PM)

I'm not sayinf Rangel deserves any kind of immunity despite the fact that I believe he has done far more good than harm. My point is that the system corrupts all the players because you can't become a player unless you , to whatever extent, embrace corruption. It's like being pregnant...there are no degrees in either. Prosecuting individuals rathet than changing the system seems to me to simply be a futile pursuit that ultimately changes nothing.

Thadius -> RE: Rangel's 4 rent stabilized apartments (7/11/2008 4:22:16 PM)

Yeah it seems like a catch 22.  Those that are in the system are the ones that need to change it, and yet why would they when the system benefits them.

Lockit -> RE: Rangel's 4 rent stabilized apartments (7/11/2008 4:23:00 PM)

Change may only come when those that seek or need the change have more of a need to have it change than those opposed and benefiting from it not being changed.  Typically seen as a revolt or war if history is any indication.

Or a revolution: maybe this time, it'll be televised.

I think we saw some of that in the sixties...

Yeah but the crowd control non-lethal devices are so much more fun these days.

I think the sixties were the fetus of a revolution that was aborted by the scare tactics of the forces of reaction.

slvemike4u -> RE: Rangel's 4 rent stabilized apartments (7/11/2008 4:44:48 PM)

Folks in this country all it would take is a grass roots committed electorate....good luck with that though,there are too many of us too comfortable...the prevailing opinion all too often is "things are okay with me"

Thadius -> RE: Rangel's 4 rent stabilized apartments (7/11/2008 4:46:56 PM)

Yep, or as Carlin used to put it "NIMBY".
