This is kind of how I see things. I obviously see the negatives in the world, but I'm just one person. I can, however, affect change in my life, from how I raise my kids, to how I help others, to how I interact with those in my community. I know a lot of kids who are, say, 17 to 23 and in talking with them and hearing about their experiences away in college - how they find the world to be once they leave suburbia, what interests them, and what direction they want to move in. Overall, it's positive. These are good, intelligent kids/young adults who contribute to society and may eventually raise their own kids in the same way. Change doesn't always have to be a big grassroots movement.
Sometimes it's a subtle shift in the wind that's difficult to see at close range, but down the road is evident.
