Status: offline 		Most of the headaches associated with Vista have been worked out over the last year and a half.  Switching over is not required, if you have XP running currently, there should be no issues.  The same protests and screams came about when Microshaft announced it would no longer be supporting Winblows 95. 

Just my thoughts on the subject.

Status: offline 		Oh FUCK! Just what I need another headache on my plate... I have several pieces of business critical software and hardware that are absolutely NOT Vista compatible... You know Microsloth should really think about the vertical markets that they impact with this. Vistsa may be great for home use, but if I cant get it to synch up with the USB controls and sim software on the "Approved Flight Training Devices" (The specification for which specifically requires thm to run on XP to be "approved") I cant use it.... Im sure there are a lot of other specialzed application similarly affected...

I understand your position, but if you are already running XP, how does them no longer selling it have any impact on you?  I do agree with you about the narrow vision that they have.  Shouldn't some of the blame for any upcoming issues you have also fall upon the vendors of the sim software?  They have known this is where Microshaft has been headed for at least a year and a half.  Or is this a regulation from the FAA that requires software to be run on XP?

Status: offline 		My next OS is Linux. I have tried it with success already on 2 of my PC's, and as soon as I can find drivers for the laptops, I will leave microsoft forever. It's time for microsoft to drop the arrogance, admit they have royally screwed up, and bend to the will of the users that have stuck with them through all their glorious mistakes.

edited to add: Bill Gates' last action before retirement should have been to fire all the idiots that came up with vista in the first place.

Status: offline 		I have been dual booting Linux for years, the only draw back is that many of the programs that I need or enjoy simply don't run in Linux, or even under an emulator like Wine.

Maybe with Gates retiring, the company will take a more proactive approach to satisfying customer's needs and desires.

Tragic.  The makers of your business critical software will just have to update their code like everyone else on the planet, which they really should have done already.  It's not as though what MS is doing is some big surprise.

Besides, there are two things that should make this somewhat less of a headache.  First, there are retailers who will be selling their inventories of XP long after MS stops selling it so if you really need more licenses, they will be available for some time.  Second, you can run your software with your current XP licenses until doomsday if you like. It's hardly the end of the world.

Status: offline 		I believe I have the first Vista program.  I have talked with someone with the newer one and we both have a similar issue with it.  I don't know how to fix it and cannot understand tech assistance because of my headaches and memory issues.  I have had many computers from a mac and windows 98 onward.  I still have a windows 98 computer that works as well as one could and for what was considered an unstable system... I didn't have any issues with it.  If I don't get this issue with Vista worked out I could lose a lot so I am not happy.  I have never had to do the back ups like with this Vista and wasn't able to do it and now my recovery is almost full and it can't do the back ups because of a couple of errors.  I had to buy new cam and all sorts of stuff especially for Vista and I don't like the quality of what I got to replace what I had and could use with XP. 

Oh well... money solves everything... but as soon as I can... I am going back to XP even if support ends soon.  Until Vista is worked out and I can better understand it, I want no part of it and it seems I am not alone.  They say that windows 7 will be out in 2009, but with all new windows there is one problem or another.  Some of us without a lot of computer knowhow really struggle with all of this and end up causing some of our own problems, I am sure, but I hate that they have us trapped into buying more and more with each new thing they bring out.

Status: offline 		I just picked up a Dell desktop running XP as a gift for a nephew. It was available at a great price for pretty good machine at Microcenter. That particular Microcenter had stacks of the computer so it seem sunlikely that XP machines will disappear entirely any time soon. Although I do recommend that anyone who feels it is vital to them to keep running XP go out and get a physical copy of the OS so you can install it on a box if you find yourself needing a new machine and can't get XP installed by the manufacturer.

ps- lets not get me started on how computers have gotten TOO invasive into ones life often containing malicious code, which make the human life subject TO the "rights" of the machine, ie computer.  This is just the start of the of this [new?] era- and with any luck I wont be alive to be ultimately 'controlled" by the whims, the burps of some little man in a room far far away- that no one, no human is able to fix,ammend, make right or otherwise render human "rights" to trump that of the machine- the grid, the RFID, the nano, the bar code  or the bill collector.   [ps- never mind]

Well if they are no longer selling it then shortly thereafter they will no longer support it, issue patches etc. The issue is the FAA, its not a regulation per se more of an "approved configuration" ie the regulation says that to log the time it has to be classified as a simulator (of various levels) "flight training device (of one of two levels) of PCATD (personal computer aviation trianing device). There are restrictions on whats loggable based on what level that configuration is certified to. Exactly what is approved as what is done via an advisory circular and letter of authorization.

Nothing in the FAA runs fast - (except fines) - so the manufacters dont release hardware or software to the public until it gets approved. If it is a PCATD then you can log 10 hours of instrument time on it, if it is an Advanced FTD you can log 20 hours of instrument and 40 hours towards the commercial etc... However, if it deviates the slightest bit from the spec - then its a fucking video game and not loggable. So, the manufacturer of say a "USB Yoke and Quadrant" has no reason to release a Vista driver until its approved on Vista because until its on the list its a non loggable video game. This is why I cruise pawn shops buying up Pentium 3's LOL Because the P-4 and later havent made the approval list yet for some of the stuff we use...

Im sure the problem carries over to other industries too... Like various CNC packages, or geological software used for seismic interpertation... A geophysicist buddy of mine has something that costs $10,000 and still needs Win NT.

Why the hell wouldn't code run on an O/S version upgrade? WINDOWS changed. .NET and/or the rest of it shouldn't DIE between XP and Vista unless MSFT is using this as an opportunity to abandon their customers.

Status: offline 		Six months ago I moved from Win 98 to Vista and was at least expecting something better, but am sorely dissapointed, what a pile of junk. I have had problem after problem with Vista, mainly caused by the crappy updates I keep getting. The last attempt to install M$ SP1 resulted in me losing my audio, a problem which according to various tech forums seems to be popular. Thankfully liasions with HP after sales service quickly corrected the problem.

Now because I was running win 98 in the past, and it became unsupported, I was forced to learn something about the system to keep it running, which it did quite well despite what I threw at it. Vista, I just cannot be bothered to learn about this what I did about win 98, and why should I, it is meant to work.

Now I run a lean system, but then my applications are few, why should I need to go out and buy more RAM when most of my activities are internet and the occasional use of photoshop and picasa, and I don't store my pics on the hard drive, they get burned onto disk asap.

Since my first run in with M$ SP1, I have lost confidence, and am now looking towards Linux, but need more knowledge before I take great pleasure in junking M$.

Status: offline 		Be warned. Linux is the O/S for people who like working on their cars. It rewards tinkering. All *real* o/s distributions ship with Perl.

Windows doesn't ship with Perl.

Windows isn't a *real* o/s distribution.
