ORIGINAL: popeye1250 When do I as an American Citizen get to address the congress? (I'd love to do so!) Go for it...lots of folks do it every year. They do the same thing lobbyists do (and in some cases, yes...it costs money to get their attention, but not in all....and not even in most); they come up with an argument, present it to their congressman and cause a bill to go to Congress for....uh huh....redress. If that doesn't work, you can write letters to news papers, blogs, any number of media to create "demand" for your product...in this case, a bill (or a House Resolution) and if it makes it that far...it gets passed...or it doesn't. Just like parents who tell their children to "work it out" on issues that are too small for them to be involved with, local courts similarly about disputes between you and your wife about what color the bathroom should be, or the Supreme Court about whether or not your neighbors tree is encroaching on your yard, so too with Congress. Just because you have grievances that should be redressed to the advantage of all US citizens, doesn't mean that it's Congress's responsability to hear them....or redress them. But one thing is certain....so long as you don't write your Congressman about them, don't tell a reporter about them, back each and every one of those issues up with hard facts, data and counter arguments so they can see that you considered every side before you brought it to them.... You're right....they won't hear you. Gris, my congressman Henry Brown's staffers and I are on a first name basis. Except during the summer when they have a lot of "interns" in the offices and boy are they informed! "We're sending foreign aid to more than 130 foreign countries........" "We are?" It's the same for senators Graham and DeMint.
