I agree with this.
The only I would see such a courtesan or prostitute of any class being submissive to is really the person who runs their business -- a madame, a pimp, themselves.
One might also argue money is another thing they submit to but then how true is that for most people through history since the creation of a money-based economy?
i guess i don't know as much as you about 19th century courtesans, thetammjo. i always thought they were akin to a Beta slave, because durirng the Victorian era, 'proper' ladies who became the wives of priviledged men were taught never to enjoy sex in any way....so the husband would take a courtesan as a kind of 'second wife'. She would be wanton and lustful in bed, fulfilling his wants/needs as well as hers.
