i'm wondering what new techy stuff P/pl want -- or don't care about.

Here's what i want:

A DVD player.  i'm tired of missing out on the 'special features' E/everyone's been telling me about.

A cordless phone for the house.  Damn Radio Shack told me to dispose of mine about a year ago, claiming the batteries for it were no longer being made.  i miss it.

A navigational device for the car.  i have no sense of direction at all, plus they have all these cool new features like 'points of interest'.

Syrrius satellite radio.  i'm not in the car enough to really justify the expense, but FM radio in my city just sucks.

Okay, here's some stuff i don't want:

A digital camera.  i rarely take pictures of anything and still have a cheap 35 mm camera.

A cell phone with features like internet connection, email, texting, etc.  I wouldn't mind having a camera phone, provided it was pretty easy to use.

Bluetooth or Sync.  i don't talk on the cell when i'm driving and i don't own an iPod.

An iPod. i still don't understand what they do.

So what techy stuff are Y/you lusting after -- and what stuff leaves Y/you cold?

I want/need a Spectrum Analyzer that I cn hook up to the dish at home... (just a small one)
A new Cisco 24 port router (I heard the 5300 series was decent)
a wireless N adapter for said router (or at least one I can put into the rack at home)

I want a Macbook Pro.
I want a Phase One camera with camera back.
All kinds of strobist flashes.
The list is endless.

Dan Healy ruined me for toys. After enjoying his and John Meyer's work ( and I guess Dr. Don should be included )
my *entry* price for toys is 1/2 Million dollars.

So why bother? I just rent what's needed when it's needed.

Pink...dvd players are really cheap....I got mine at Wally World for about 30 bucks, works fine.  The only problem you'll run into is if you have an older TV set with only a coax cable hook up....I ended up running my dvd thru my VCR, then to the TV....there were some dvd's that I couldn't watch because the picture was distorted.

Whoever told you that nonsense about the batteries for your cordless was full of it.  I get mine for my phones at Wal-mart....(yeah, say what you will about their practices, but you can't beat the prices, or in this case, selection with a stick!).  They have ones made by the major battery manufacturers that will fit most/all phones.  Just know what kind of phone you have, or take the old battery and match up the conector end and size.

I'm not the most technoligically advanced person...I still use my 35mm pentax camera for pics, have no desire for a digital cam, or iPod, or any of the other gadgets that are out there.  My cell phone is a basic one, no bells, whistles or camera.  My PC is 5 years old, still works fine as far as I'm concerned...altho I am thinking about upgrading to a flat screen.  And I did add a 512k memory stick. I have no idea what all the terminolgy means as far as what a computer has for RAM/ROM/RIM, megabytes, gigabytes, overbytes.....whatever.....just show me how to check my e-mail, and what programs are there, and I can figure out the rest!  That's why I know people who know what I don't!  It's easier for me to pay someone to do their thing than it would be if I tried to fix it myself.

I have most of the techy stuff I want.  I just want to be able to increase the memory of and network all three of my DirecTv tivos.  I can probably do it myself, I just haven't had the impetus to learn how to do it.  There is something to be said for just hiring people.  lol

Oh.. and WiiFit

Wants -

An account at Newegg so I can build/play/rebuild the computers when I want
Digital 35mm Canon camera, lenses etc
An MP3 player small enough to not need a suitcase and carry my music collection
An easy way of converting all my vinyl music to MP3's without me being there (maybe a sub could help)
A real Ebook, real pages to turn, the feel of a book, but uploadable reading material

Not wanted -

All of the computer controls on cars, no brain, no traction control, no rev limiters
A remote electro shock collar for parents who allow their UM's access to all of the web and leave the room therafter
Tivo, barely watch tv so recording it is a total waste ..... sports are live, if I miss it I get the score in the newspapers
All singing all dancing cell phones, let me call and text and I'm happy

Just got a new 46 in 1080p plasma, now I'm trying to figure out if it would be better to get a BlueRay player or a Ps3. I really wouldn't use the Ps3 for games...I guess my kids/grandkids might when they visit....but the sales guy said Ps3 is the way to go...something about being able to upgrade it online.

Most, if not all, of the BluRay players and the PS3 is upgradable online.  I used to work for Circuit City and I learned that when technology goes past the 1080p level, you'll be able to download new drivers for the 1440p that is expected to come out in a couple of years.  Although it won't really matter since TVs and BluRay discs with the 1440p capability won't show themselves for a while anyway.

I recommend buying the PS3 because you not only get the exact same BluRay player that is all over the market, you get the PS3 game console, too, for your kids/grandkids.  The price for a 40GB PS3 is about $400...the price of BluRay players usually start at around $400.  With the PS3, you get two items for the price of just a BluRay player.  You just get more bang for your buck with the PS3, plus it's the same BluRay player that you could buy for $600 or more...it plays the same BluRay discs in the same 1080p format.

Just my opinion, though.....

i'm not into alot of techy stuff, the way i see it is i want basic function without alot of fancy features to go belly up the day after the warranty expires.  maybe that's why i love classic cars, older homes and so on.  the idea of tossing things out after 5 yrs never did appeal to me, so i prefer very well built functional things i can use for a long time.  the computer world is a perfect example, by the time something hits the shelves it's damn near obsolete in six months if not less!  guess i'm a little old fashioned that way.

I intend to buy the new iPhone 3G as soon as it's available AND it coinicides with the termination of my current rate plan. All the goo ga's I can use when I'm on the road! I Lust after a Mac Pro tower with 8 processors and 16 gigs of ram.4 terabytes of 10,000 RPM HD storage..... a new Fire Wire 800 audio interface..... a Kawaii MP8 MK11 digital piano.... I want the Bose 'Stick" to paly it through. A Fazioli 7' Grand would look really swell in my studio too. < not high tech but one of the most stunningly gorgeous sounding hand built pianos on the market.

I might someday get a big screen or a projector - I prefer the idea of a projector. That's about it. I don't really need this stuff as I am satisfied to watch 27-32" traditional, non-HD, TVs. I have the largest music collection of anyone I know. There are usually over 5 computers in my house turned on at any one time, all of various ages and serving different functions. We have cell phones, laptops, computerized vehicles, etc.

Fuck, it's all bullshit.

If I want a DVD I can buy, rent, or loan from the library (which itself has significant holdings).

I don't know who buys all this stuff endlessly. It's just one small part of modern life. Nothing to get excited about.

Meh, I just can't get it up over techno-lust.

You can use the radio in the house too I believe. James had one and we often used it in his trailer.

I want a new digital camera since someone at my brothers wedding broke mine, and James wants a WII. And he wants to replace his broken 360. Ipods allow you to take your movies and pictures with you where ever you go. I think some even allow little movie clips. they're basically storage devices for mp3's pictures or movies.

My techno wish list is pretty short.  I want a decent gaming laptop for Sir (his is just terrible) so we can game together on something newer than the original Neverwinter Nights.  I have just about everything else.  I'm happy with my Zune and Vista rocks.

Things I don't want:  Anything by Apple. Their ads are insulting and elitist.
