Why do people always look up, when addressing a disembodied voice?
I was on an elevator earlier today that got stuck in between floors and when the concierge came on over the speaker and told us it would be fixed shortly, and asked if everyone was alright, the whole car looked up to answer.

I'd hazzard a guess that if you looked down to talk to god, in public, the weight of Abrahamic religious presumption would land on you like a ton of bricks.

That or the speakers in the elevator are usually in the ceiling.

And god said, to remember your sojourns, you shall live for a time in booths, and you shall hide yourselves, and not see your coming and going, but shall push buttons, and hear the word of Muzak, from sunup until sundown, and lo, you shall take great hearken to your soul in these booths,  in which you shall quake, and shivver and hear the word of the lord your god, and I shall set a priesthood before you and you shall call them Otis.

Because if you looked down when you talked then you'd be addressing Satan.

God told me, with a slightly different reference She did not remember who built the elevator (actually the reference was "Church") but She did make the sunshine.  She has never steered me wrong before, and it was always wise to look up to talk to Her.  She tended to get annoyed with those who spoke to Her breasts, as outstanding as they might be, and Her feet had no ears.

i look down, myself; it's how i was taught to pray in and out of church as a child and i guess some things never leave Y/you.

i kinda thought E/everyone did the same thing -- 'bow yr head and pray' -- but i guess it's today's lesson in diversity.

I look down, if I looked up I might see the sun, and then I'd turn to ash.

Most of the elevators I have been on, have the speakers in the roof. If that is where the voice was coming from, then that is the direction I would be likely to look.

People look up when they talk of God because they know that he's a bearded old man who lives up in the clouds. Same reason why they look up when the speak of Father Xmas. Matter of fact, rumour has it, they're the same guy.

the speaker in the elevator in my hotel has the speaker next to the button you push to notify the desk of a problem..so roughly about midthigh level.
(on a side note.. it amazes me how many people push the BRIGHT RED BUTTON that is a good 6 inches below the floor level buttons... and seem shocked when I respond to the call.  "I don't know how that happened!!" they say./. sheesh)

Its kinda interesting how many people brought god into this question. You said a disembodied voice and refered to the concierge. What does prayer have to do with this post?

GreedyTop -> RE: Is that you god? (6/14/2008 6:42:17 AM)

probably because of the title, boi.. .

Leatherist -> RE: Is that you god? (6/14/2008 6:42:25 AM)

Most people who talk to disembodied voices seem to need anti physchotic medication. [;)]

I cant believe I just stumbled on a post I actually know the answer to! So listen up people! Listen up!

Our brains are divided into parts for various things. When recalling, we look to the right. When lying, we look to the left. When talking to god, the part of the brain we go to is above our eyes.  No lie. Very simple science in fact.

SO, what we're really doing is looking INSIDE our heads, and our eyes follow. Gold star for me!

GT, we have the same problem where I work......apparently, personnel in one specific building can't seem to understand that the button marked EMERGENCY doesn't take you to any floor.....same reaction...we ask if they are stuck in the elevator, they say "No.....why do you ask?".  Then there are the few who say they hit it accidentally.....I dunno. maybe with their knee?

ARRRRGHHHH!  people are DUMB!

Up versus Down.

Now if your going to look at it from a Humanistic stand point of view, and not a religious then I suggest you read a book called "God Voices and the Separation of the Bi-Carmel Mind" Wow what a title. But the book goes to suggest that Man once had a uni-Carmel mind and that when Evolution came along and separated the whole brain into the two halves that we have today that man had no idea of how to deal with unique situations.

So that "god" was the other half of the mind giving instructions to the other half on how to deal with this new and unique problem. The Book is a fascinating read however is about totally and completly atheist.

Also, if you look into the concept of Human body language as it would interconnect with the above paragraph. People looking up when thinking tend to be thinking at a higher level of thought processes. people that look down while thinking tend to be looking into their emotions while making their decisions.

If you'd like to prove this as someone to make a emotional choice, versus a philoshophical choice and see which way their head goes.

All People believe it or not have a God shaped hole in their heart and they need it to be filled. Many choose to fill it with themselves rather than allow God to fill it for them. You may say that you don't believe in God, I say that you already do, you believe that he dosn't exist. How can you believe in something that you know isn't real?

For Example I do not believe in the Greek Gods, I know they are not real, My life is not spent trying to prove they don't exsist as athiest do to try to prove that the Christian God isn't real.

Funny, I have yet to meet an atheist who made the slightest effort to disprove the existance of God.

Uff Da, John...sticky business

I am quite sure you meant cameral (as in camera) and not burnt sugar, I am doing this so people can find the book faster and not browse the cooking section.
