The lift speaker was near the ceiling? I know on the trains I look up because the train speaker is on the ceiling. Because the speaker is set up on the side of the elevator wall and not down at the floor level. We instinctively expect that the person's ears will be very close to their mouth and the fact that this is a disembodied machine talking doesn't change instinct.
