pinksugarsub -> Question About Anti-Spyware Programs (6/11/2008 6:04:48 PM)

My spybot and ad-aware stopped working properly.  After trying to figure out what to do, i installed avg.

The install i chose was 'free' but the program asks me if i wish to pay now or continue a trial peiod.

The install also put a firewall up.

The install directed me to remove any other anti-virus and ant-spyware programs i had installed.  i believe the only ones on my pc now are from ATT dsl and microsoft.  i chose not to try and delete them, and went ahead with the avg install.

i don't know what to do now.  Did i install the wrong version of avg?

Thanks for any input Y/you may give.

MasterGyre -> RE: Question About Anti-Spyware Programs (6/11/2008 6:07:55 PM)

I don't think our AVG did anything like that, but then again, I wasn't present for the installation process...

If it gives you too much hell, I strongly recommend Spybot - Search and Destroy as a anti-spyware program.  At least, it has never let me down in the past and it's absolutely free.  ^^'

Sorry that I couldn't be of more help.

CarrieO -> RE: Question About Anti-Spyware Programs (6/11/2008 6:11:06 PM)

I was fortunate enough to have a friend install Trendmicro for me....works perfectly.

However, I agree w/ MasterGyre...SpyBot is great and is my back-up plan!

good luck.

I strongly suggest you use more than one of any virus annnnd spyware program..even if you have to install then uninstall to add the next one..i use 3 and each one catches something new..so i'll wait for awhile till they have a chance to load up my system.then i'll load each program/clean.uninstall and do the next program...i'd say in a month or two then check  it..i bet you'll find new ones that one software alone didn't get.

Level -> RE: Question About Anti-Spyware Programs (6/11/2008 6:19:48 PM)

If the one you downloaded only gives you "30 day trial or buy now" then it isn't the free one.

Here is a link: http://free.grisoft.com/

The one on the left is the freebie, which I use.

As for the removal of the other programs, that (I think) is to prevent them from clashing. Some of these programs see others as bugs or viruses, if I remember correctly.

Stusmobile -> RE: Question About Anti-Spyware Programs (6/11/2008 6:21:49 PM)

Reconfigure Adaware and Spybot and get them working again, they pick up most if not all the crap thats floating around.

DomKen -> RE: Question About Anti-Spyware Programs (6/11/2008 9:20:22 PM)

Anti viru sprograms do not work well with other anti virus programs. You really should only have one. For anti spyware software it is usually best to only have one that monitors the machine like the anti virus software does but you can and should have 2 anti spyware programs for scanning the machine for possible infections. Ad aware and spybot search and destroy are both excellent programs and it would be wise to get them both and scan at least weekly.

Thanks a lot, Level.

i'm not going to attempt any more installations of either spybot or ad-aware.  It's a shame; they were my tools for years, and i tried to be diligent and use them weekly.  But enough is enough.  For me, both programs are FUBAR and i'm just gonna accept it.

i have other anti-virus and anti-spyware programs 'installed' from my dsl company and microsoft.  i'm not gonna spend the time to try and find them and delete them. They aren't on my add/delete programs list; the search function doesn't find them; and i'm a little concerned about screwing up my pc even worse by deleting something esential from the dsl or microsoft collection of programs.

i've been told avg is a great program.  At least i'll have something!

Thanks again to E/everyone who responded.

Just to be clear, the Ad Aware will work with AVG. I had to reinstall the AA last week, I kept getting an error message when attempting to remove spyware. Now, it works fine. Good luck on it.

there is a serious problem that this type of thinking can lead you into, one that I have seen often... well, actually, 2 problems

1. it can seriously fuck up your registry. (especially when you are uninstalling and re-installing multiple apps like that)

2. 1/2 of your programs will come up with ghosts, i.e. viruses that dont actually exist... the other 1/2 will decide that  a valid security program is said virus and try to delete it (see point 1 for what that does)

there are quite a few good programs out there, look for the ones that have a free home version, and a pay-for corporate version, there is a reason they make enough with one to support the other.

Hudson: Fuckin' A...

Burke: Ho-ho-hold on, hold on one second. This installation has a substantial dollar value attached to it.

Ripley: They can *bill* me.

The price you pay for choosing the inferior Microsoft platform is that it's always one step away from falling apart.

If you've spent more than 4 hours fucking around with your computer, you're better off wiping it clean, and doing a fresh install from the recovery CDs, and then just restoring all your files from your backup of "My Documents".

You *are* putting all your important files in "My Documents"?

You *are* copying "My Documents" to a USB drive weekly?

If you're not, then you're not prepared for a computer FAILURE, much less a standard brain-wipe/reload cycle.

This is possibly one of the silliest suggestions I have ever heard about anti-virus software.  If one is using it properly, keeping it updated, and being at all smart about how they use the net - the scans for viruses and trojans should find almost nothing - because it should keep you from getting the malicious code installed in the first place.  Uninstaling and reinstalling all the time?  Sorry - that is just asking for trouble.

Ok, I am going to qualify this by saying, my best friend is one of the world's foremost authorities on computer security.

Here is what I recommend based on my experience, and what I have gained from knowing him and his anti-virus pals:

1. Stop using Internet Explorer.  Use Firefox instead.  Most malicious code is written to exploit IE.  Script-kiddies don't bother writing code to exploit Firefox.

2. Use the Firefox adblock feature.

3.  Ask it to notify you when sites try to set cookies - and deny all but those you need to make the site function.  (Sites where you log-in, and sites where you shop need to install some cookies.)

4.  Invest in a comprehensive security suite.  My personal preference is TrendMicro.

5.  Uninstall applications that clash with it - like Windows Firewall.  Once TrendMicro installs, Ad Aware and Spybot seem to work ok if you reinstall them.  No matter what else you use, you can also run "Housecall" which is Trend's online tool.

6. Set your security software to update daily - yes, daily.  Set it to do a basic scan daily.  Use real-time scanning so you don't download malicious code to begin with.  Set it kind of high until you get used to how it works.

7.Set Windows to do automatic updates so it installs security patches as soon as they come out.

8.  Expect most pornographic sites and gambling sites to be FULL of malicious code.  Browse them at your own risk.  This will sound like a crazy conspiracy theory - but most of the serious "hacking" is now done by the Russian mob - no, really.  And they infest porn and gambling sites.  Play at your own risk.

Basically, this is part of what I do when I set up a new PC - then it's done and I don't have to think about it often.  If you are unwilling to take the time to set it up properly, you will really hate it when you have to rebuild your system.

Common misconception - that you will actually "see" anything that a virus, trojan, or block of malicious code is doing.  Unless you get a hijacked browser, you are unlikely to notice much of anything except a gradual decline in performance, and rarely - identity theft.  Most of the time if someone steals your password - they didn't steal it at all - they just asked you for it and you gave it to them.

farglebargle -> RE: Question About Anti-Spyware Programs (6/12/2008 4:06:49 PM)

Don't forget the NoScript add-on for Firefox.

pinksugarsub -> RE: Question About Anti-Spyware Programs (6/12/2008 9:40:35 PM)

Ok, so this is what has happened:

AVG failed.  It was bitch to remove too.

i had to delete the ATT Security Suite because my pc doesn't have sufficient memory for it.

i reinstalled the free version of ad-aware and it's running now.  i'm doing a 'full scan' and it's been running for a couple of hours already.  i'll just let it run all night & respond to it in the morning.

i tried to delete spybot -- which is 'hidden' in my pc.  None of the programs i tried were effective and i deleted them all.

If A/anyone knows the link to a free spybot removal tool, i'd appreciate it.

Thank Y/you to E/everyone who has responded.

farglebargle -> RE: Question About Anti-Spyware Programs (6/13/2008 12:15:49 AM)

I still think you're wasting your time, and should just wipe the thing and reload it from scratch.

All these programs have all sorts of hooks into your registry. Unless you're cleaning *them* out, too, I fear this is an exercise in futility.

Here's something to consider. These 'repair' programs... They're installing *more* crap behind the scenes..

pinksugarsub -> RE: Question About Anti-Spyware Programs (6/13/2008 12:52:58 AM)

Thanks again for all the help so far.

Ad-aware took hours to run a full scan and found only 24 minor problems.  i suspect it may not be adequate.

i can't d/l spybot until i can s'how remove the 'hidden' files from my pc.  My surfing hasn't led me to any free removal tool.

Microsoft is sending me messages, telling me to (buy) a compatible anti-virus program.  i can't afford the expense.  Is there a free alternative?

i hope i'm not driving Y/you nuts with all these questions, and greatly appreciate Y/your help.

Asherdelampyr -> RE: Question About Anti-Spyware Programs (6/13/2008 12:54:46 AM)

it could also mean that you only have 24 minor problems

pinksugarsub -> RE: Question About Anti-Spyware Programs (6/13/2008 10:02:28 AM)

Thanks again for Y/your patience and help.

i've been told that Ad-Aware is now considered almost completely ineffective.  Has A/anyone else heard this?

If i decide to get a different anti-spyware program, do Y/you have any strong feelings about spybot vs. avg?

pinksurgersub,

Based on this partial quote above it appears that you think that an anti-virus
and an anti spyware program are the same.  This is not the case.

Virus programs and spyware are not the same thing   They both fall under the
general category of malware or "bad stuff you didn't ask for and don't want in
your computer."   But there are significant differences.

Rather than give you advice I am going to give you a link to expert help.

Steve Gibson is the man who invented the term spyware.  He has many helpful
links on his website and even has a way to test your machine for flaws that will
make it vunerable.  He also has links to places to get copies of interviews he has
done when appearing as an expert on computer radio shows.  And he has more
helpful links, downloads, information and resources.

His website is Gibson Research,  when you get there click Shields UP and
begin by testing your machine.   Then when you know more you will be able
to make you own informed choices.

I use Mcafee Security Center and it has protected my computer really well. Also, they always give some great deals when your subscription is about to run out...well last time i renewed under an expired 30% savings email and they honored it..so that was good![:)] i tried spybot a few times but it always was messing up my computer.
