Screen legend and former chain-smoker Paul Newman has been diagnosed with terminal lung cancer and is under the care of a leading oncologist at Sloan-Kettering Memorial, reports Elizabeth Snead at The L.A. Times' The Envelope. There's been dire speculation about Newman's health since he abruptly pulled out a planned movie with Robert Redford that was going to be shot in North Carolina last year and instead announced his retirement from the screen.

slaveboyforyou -> RE: Paul Newman (6/10/2008 8:17:19 PM)

He's 83 years old for fuck's sake.  The guy wants to retire, and the tabloids just can't let him go.  I don't even see why this would be a story.  They call him a former chain smoker and try to make it into a tragedy.  How the hell is dying at age 83 a tragedy?

*strikes my zippo to light another Winson*  Living to age 83 ain't nothing to cry about.

PanthersMom -> RE: Paul Newman (6/10/2008 8:23:45 PM)

damn i sure hope the reports aren't true!  paul used to race out at nelson's ledges road course back when my dad was racing, i've seen him around.  nobody really cared who he was, he was just one of the guys out to have some fun.  he looked good in his fireproof racing suit.[sm=insane.gif]

I hope the report I posted is the true one.

I met him at Lime Rock back when he was racing.  As PanthersMom said, he was just one of the guys at the track.  And a really nce guy at that.

meatcleaver -> RE: Paul Newman (6/11/2008 2:29:44 AM)

He's 83! He's already in the grim reaper's antechamber. He's got to die of smomething, why not lung cancer, if it wasn't that it would be something else.

He and his work are well loved; he matters to a lot of people. That's why it's a story.

Well apparently he retired and wants to be left alone.  So I don't see tabloid journalists showing the man much respect by speculating over his reason to retire.  Being 83 years old is a good enough reason for me for a man to retire.

I like his movies, and his pasta sauces aren't bad.  But I don't obsess about people I don't know.
