Something to take into account in this 2008 election...race is going to be an issue no matter what... and it isnt the GOP that is flying the race card. Some Democrats in key swing states are apparently uneasy about Obama's race.

And these are just the ones admitting to the racism...I am certain there are those that are keeping it to themselves.

----------------------------
GREENSBURG, Pa. - Joyce Susick is the type of voter who might carry Barack Obama to the White House — or keep him out. A registered Democrat in a highly competitive state, she is eager to replace George W. Bush, whom she ranks among the worst presidents ever. There's just one problem.

"I don't think our country is ready for a black president," Susick, who is white, said in an interview in the paint store where she works. "A black man is never going to win Pennsylvania."

"I don't think we're ready for either one yet (a black or a woman president)," said Doug Richardson, 62, a contractor from Latrobe. Obama "just hasn't impressed me," he said over midmorning coffee with a friend at Denny's. "His middle name bothers me a lot." That name is Hussein.

Just throwing this out there.

Every election they do random interviews on the streets and ask people who they are going to vote for and why.

The answers are usually somewhere in the realm of...

"I am gonna vote for Bill Clinton, because he seems nice."

and...

"I am gonna vote for Bush, because he's from Texas!"

So in light of these trends, is it all that big of a surprise when people choose race as their compelling reason to support a candidate?

Further more, is it anymore asinine and less legitimate than the reasons listed above or is it simply just drama that's newsworthy?

I've read a number of these articles in the last half a year and they always seem surprised that people are *gasp* choosing dumb reasons to vote for a candidate.

I don't expect there's anyone out there who's surprised by this.  I don't think that there's ever been a candidate who didn't lose some votes due to prejudice.  The four top contenders this season all had to deal with this - Obama's black, Clinton's female, McCain's old, Romney's Mormon.  There are some weirder prejudices out there.  I know a woman who is a life-long Democrat who couldn't vote for Bill Clinton because she can't stand southern accents.

It will be interesting to see how much of a factor race is come November.  While there will be people who won't vote for Obama because he's black, there appear to be a lot of people who are engaging in the process for the first time because there is a black candidate.  These new Obama voters are likely to give a boost to D's further down the ticket.  I'm sure that's causing the RNC some heartburn.  It will be interesting to see how they deal with that dynamic.

Poll in the midwest and you'll find state after state of racist voters.  I'm surprised they voted for Obama in the first place.

Yes, it will be an issue.  I've now read for the 4th time about the Michelle Obama "whitey" tape.  I'm beginning to believe they don't have one yet keep the hype alive just because.

Nobody seems to question the motives of Afro-Americans who plan to vote for Obama. Can't they be racist too?

I'm like Stephen Colbert. I don't see color differences. Everybody is a pukey, greenish gray to me.

We need to start "hiring" managers to be in the White House not "electing" them.
This election crap will have been going on for *two fucking years* come Jan!
And what's all this B.S. about "Leadership?"
How does making good grades in school or public speaking make *anyone* a "Leader?"
If that's the criteria then this country has too many Cheifs and not enough Indians.
Everyone and their brother and cousin is trying to call themselves a "Leader."
How many of you think that Bush is a "Leader?"
The only real "Leaders" are military people.
CEO's are "Managers" not "Leaders."
Hmm, maybe I should start a new thread on that.
As for voters being racists there's plenty in Massachusetts too, that Bastion of Liberalism!
They voted for Hillary in the primary not Obama.
And Kennedy's "endorsement" in that state will hurt Obama not help him.
Too many people in Massachusetts love the Clintons and Ted Kennedy stabbed them in the back!

what?  racism?  oh good heavens, say it isn't so!  not here!  why should this surprize anyone?  hello, have they just crawled out from under a rock?  people aren't always honest about the race issue and how it will affect the outcome of their vote.  personally, it won't affect mine, i see all politicians the same, that is that they should be wearing prison stripes and cuffs!

Katylied thanks for the link,The fact that some will use race as a deciding factor should come as no surprise to anyone. What i would find interesting though is a poll showing (or attempting to)how many people will vote against there own interest based on race.Sort of like the Clinton "feminists" who now declare they will vote for McCain

While I agree that many people will vote based on race, I would argue that, strictly speaking, it is not possible for someone to vote against their own interest (assuming no coercion, et cetera).

If they cast their ballot freely, however they vote is by definition an expression of how they define their own interest.

Well that depends...

What exactly makes Obama the "right" candidate and what makes McCain the "wrong" candidate? Its a matter of perception in the eye of the beholder.

Okay I set myself up on that one ,allow me to rephrase .How many voters will ,due to race, vote against their own broader self interest.I suspect You knew what I meant CL ,but couldn't resist calling me on it.CyberDude I made no distinction at all about right or wrong candidate the OP was about voters who would use race as a litmus test,I just sought to add a question, not to declare a preference

In all seriousness, I'm not "calling you" on anything.  As a matter of philosophical principle I believe the only person who can define what is in an indvidual's self-interest (broad or narrow, take your pick) is that individual.  The rest of us can only guess at it.

So how is it in America these days - it was generally accepted that racists hadta be white, no?

But then I yousta have a quiet chuckle when the champions of democracy would proudly proclaim that any American could become Prez....  Lol, yeah, any filthy rich, white, male American.  Looks like one stereotype is about to change.

Totally ignoring the original example I cited, which was Clinton's female backers in anger over her losing the nod declaring they will vote for McCain who's record on "female" issues is spotty at best anti-choice at worst...hence broader issues
