Status: offline 		first: a quick joke/story that happened to me recently...

a ditzy blonde paris hilton type girl and I were interacting... she thought I was hitting on her and was insulted by it. Me being in a smart ass mood.. I asked her "whats the opposite of Vanilla? " she said Chocolate. I quickly replied: "well in my world the correct answer is LEATHER...so relax there is no way I'm hitting on you"
(when asked to explain I said "i like girls who wear corsets and have tatts and piercings and crazy colored hair...and left it at that)

So I was reminded of this story from the vanilla post that just popped up.

what do YOU consider the opposite of vanilla(at least in the context of WIITWD)

I have my Leather Family, my g/f's Leather sister. etc etc.

most times people in the scene know what i'm talking about..but sometimes they don't...

I doubt I would change my verbage anytime soon but i'm curious as to what do you use?

Status: offline 		well my life tends to be more swirly than either all vanilla or either all not vanilla so it's sort of hard to say. even my out of scene friends have some kink of their own. i personally don't like vanilla as a term since so many people i know that seem 'vanilla' have so many things going on in their closets that they would rather not be discussed. i think of it more as kink/non kink. i do tend to talk about relationships in terms of alpha, beta, etc to diferentiate from my out of scene relationships, to the point where i'll talk about beta sub and so on. i guess it's a long rambly response to essentially say that i personally don't see it as a black and white issue lol.

Status: offline 		In my opinion, the opposite of vanilla is a full time 24/7 TPE dynamic, to me thats as extreme as it can get within the limits of care & consent.

Status: offline 		Well, I've always viewed "vanilla" as the opposite of any kind of kink, so for Me the opposite of vanilla is kink to any degree.

For me the opposite of vanilla is Lemon which always adds a unique twist to things :)  

Of course it would take someone getting to know me and mine to fully understand that answer but to most in our local scene the answer of Lemon would suffice.

Status: offline 		Well, maybe i'm taking it a bit too literally, but i would consider Fetish to be the opposite... specifically when you go to the clinical definition of fetish, rather than the popular "well, this is something unusual that I enjoy once in a while" definition.

For people involved in kink, "Vanilla" used to mean not kinky, based on mainstream society's view of sex.  But, since the meaning of what "kinky" is keeps changing, that's not even always true. 
 
Long ago, having sex with your spouse, in the middle of the day or with the lights on was considered "kinky".  Now, giving your husband, boyfriend or boss a blow-job any time, anywhere (out of public view) isn't considered kinky, by most of mainstream society, outside of the most fundamentalist religious groups.
 
Basically, "vanilla" has lost much of it's meaning, which is why i prefer the word, "conventional" instead of "kinky", when talking about non-kinky sex and the word, "traditional", when talking about non-D/s relationships.  Of course, those terms probably aren't totally accurate, either and, when talking with people who i know have the same definition for "vanilla", i will just use that word.

Status: offline 		i have an opinion, but it's nothing more than that, and i'd have to go into some detail to explain it because there is no agreement on what 'vanilla' means....so there's no generally accepted antonymn for it.
 
This lack of a mutually accepted nomeclature for D/s is a bit of a barrier to good communication, but is probably inevitable given the diversity of P/pl drawn to D/s and all it's flavors.

LOL...I used to use Alternative but then I just started refering to everything and everyone "alternative" as "freaks" which anyone who knows me knows it is said with the most loving of sentiments...
I was just getting tired of explaining that I am part: punk, goth, kinkster, lifestyler, fetishist, rockabilly, with a certain flair for the Noir...
so now I just say "i'm a freak"

as for seeing me on the boards? where have you been? I've been on here fairly activly for almost a year now. but I'm still glad because it will be interesting to bounce ideas off each other:)

overall I know there is no right or wrong answer really, I was just curious. especially since at least hear in NYC, there are different stigmas applied to terms like : lifestyler, Fetishist, Kinkster.... although its a very arguable thing...in my oppinion they can be considered different social scenes here. which is in part why I stick with using "Leather" as the opposite of Vanilla...

I like the term conservative and non-conservative.  The term traditional, however has a different connotation in my mind!  Coming from a Southern Baptist upbringing, where women were expected to submit themeselves to their husbands, unto the lord - well to me, Traditional translates to D/s! 

10 years ago, I would  have said that anything that was kinky was the opposite of Vanilla.  Now, I tend to think of Vanilla the way I do about words like sane and normal.  Vanilla (Sane/Normal) is what a person is until you REALLY get to know them.
