I took a road trip to Wallingford, and as soon as we hit the state line for Connecticut we started getting flashed with headlights and honked at for going 15 over the speed limit. What the hell mate? I asked my friend who lives in Wallingford and she says the only explanation is that they're all rich new yorkers who commute to work so they're all frustrated as hell and take it out on fellow motorists. I say it's a sound theory.
It's because driving 15 mph over the speed limit in CT is considered driving too slow....

In Hartford, Connecticut a 78-year old man was stuck by a car in a hit and run. Even though the street was busy with bystanders on the sidewalk, no one offered to help the man. Not only that, cars swerved out of the way and no one stopped.

No one does anything but stare until finally a police cruiser comes drives by responding to an unrelated call.

"It was one of the most despicable things I've seen by one human being to another," the Rev. Henry Brown, a community activist, said in an interview. "I don't understand the mind-set anymore. It's kind of mind-boggling. We're supposed to help each other. You see somebody fall, you want to offer a helping hand."

I just saw the video on MSNBC of this; it makes me want to puke.

It's simple - don't rush.

No sense in stressing yourself out just to accomodate strangers.

exactly...when i find me fixing to get upset with a slow elderly driver or walker, i just remind me id give anything to have my elderly parents here again, no matter how slowly they moved.

as for the op.....when i heard this on the news, i was so sure i had misunderstood.  too bad i didnt.  sheesh, people are strange.

No no, according to my Midwestern born and bred daughter, now living in Boston, they are called "Massholes".

General reply:
i drive all throughout the state daily. Traffic is obnoxious...but Fleursssssss....Hartford knocking is just plain mean spirited.
i watched the video and saw it on the news the day it happened. From the footage i could really only see about 4 people. No mob mentality can be blamed there....just a bunch of normal everyday assholes. i was disgusted by it. And it proves my point. Connecticut is a beautiful state...i just need to figure out a way to scrape about 60% of the people off of it in order to fully enjoy it.

And i bet he drove in the left lane too

i used to be the light flashing late to work NYer.  People speed everywhere. i drove in the midwest and was going up the interstate in Wisconsin to Oshkosh and the right lane was 70 mph, middle lane was 80 mph and left lane was 90 mph. Only difference from there and here is that in the midwest they were more polite and actually used their blinkers and gave others the right of way.  It seemed everyone was cooperating.  When i failed to use my blinker i got beeped at lol.  In NY if you use your blinker it just signals the other driver to speed up and not let you in... so i stopped signaling and had many less problems.

Emporer,
Yes indeed as a native Mainer, from May until Labor Day we call them "massholes". Usually that is right before we give them the wrong directions. kidding!!!

I generally think first aid should be taught at school as people are too scared to get involved for fear of making the situation worse. The chances are slim that you'll have an accident near someone who knows even the basic airways, breathing, circulation first aids steps that aren’t particularly groundbreaking and hard to master but could make all the difference no matter how horrific the scene. Easy for us to judge but these people had just been witness to the horrific scene and were in shock. I don't know that it is callous I just think it's borne of the fact they had no basic training to call on and didn’t know how to act when push come to shove.

Even if these people weren't qualified to help, they could have called 911.  I don't believe inthe idea that people should be required to help in emergencies.  Some dumbasses should be forbidden from it in fact.  I see people every day who I would prefer would let me linger in pain than make katters worse by touching me.

The report said four 911 calls were made within one minute of the accident. It's true sometimes people can do more harm than good, removing motor cyclists helmet is a good example of bad. If people had training they'd have confidence to act and help in a basic way that is the point.

There are some EMTs that I will not allow to touch me.  Even with training, some people are too stupid to properly hand out a band aid much less tend a serious injury.  The casino I used to work at had an EMT like that.  He was eventually demoted to security guard because nobody would allow him to work on them.

Personally if I had a family member in need I'd want someone with training on the scene as soon as possible. We can argue about who, it doesn't matter, in the UK an Ambulance can take ten minutes to arrive and has been known to take far longer.

I agree with you there.  The problem as I see it is weeding out the ones who will cause more harm than good.  Maybe if they fail your training class they have to get out of the way and can only work the phone for those who help?  They would be card carrying "gophers" in case of emergencies.

Hello all.......

We had one even worse here in the city of Phoenix.  A man was struck, and I believe later died from his injuries, and the bystanders did run over to his aid......and some of them actually stole his groceries.

There is no kindness in the Human Race anymore.  Such a sorry state of affairs.  It still surprises me the looks I get when I'm in a checkout line, and if someone with less items is behind me, I'll let them go in front of me.  I'm never in a hurry when doing my errands....don't need the extra frustration.  It's never killed me yet to be polite, or nice to a stranger....but I live in fear that one day, even that will get you just that.
