how is it y'all buy houses, get food, pay bills and have any kind of fun on those wages??

You don't, especially the "buy houses" part; you may not have insurance, either. Some of these jobs are also exempt from overtime regulations, and it gets complicated:

To protect the companionship services exemption, a guardian privately hiring a home health aid should ensure that the companion does not provide general housework in excess of twenty percent of the aid's total weekly hours. Although the companionship services exception excludes housework related to personal care (preparing meals, making beds, washing clothes, washing dishes, sweeping the floor after meals, scrubbing the bath tub after a bath), other housekeeping activities not related to the individual's personal care, such as vacuuming, washing floors or windows, or cleaning refrigerators, must be considered non-exempt "general household work" that is subject to the 20% time limitation. If the aid exceeds the 20% limitation, you may subject your ward to costly overtime and penalties, which could have been avoided.

Caretaking's never been a well-regarded line of work over here.  It's one more thorn in the side of people with disabled children or elderly, ill parents.  Folks get outraged about how in the "ooooold days", families took care of that themselves, disregarding the fact that you can live a long, long time with diseases or disabilities that would've killed people swiftly in the past.  Someone's got to work to get insurance and pay for all the out of pocket expenses.  Maybe even both parents, and that means help is needed at home.  If you can find it.

Well, Angel, I rent, and had to downsize there, the bills and the rent get paid first, then it's cat food and groceries, and IF there's anything left over, that's my "fun money"...I've learned to get by rather cheaply here.  The cost of living isn't so bad here, but the wages paid reflect that.

The economy is still tough.....I'm just glad I have a job at this point in the game.  There are thousands of others who are out of work, and have been for many months or even years.  Right now, it's an employer's market, and they are picking and choosing very carefully!

ShaharThorne -> RE: The Holly and Potty Show (4/28/2011 10:24:00 PM)

Mom owns the property for over 27 years and we did the house by our selves.  As part of my agreement, I paid her sears and some other bills off.  House burnt down in '98, so Mom got a decent 2/1.  When Dad died, she used the insurance to pay off the trailer.

I pay $250 in rent, I pay my bills and get some 'toys' for myself (read books, yarn and ice cream).  I am finix' to get the bills that was not covered by Medicare and Medicaid.  I love Ebaying a lot, but I have to watch what I am biding on. (I am avoiding Aussie auctions since they are a bite on the expensive.)

Now, 3 doctors are recommending that I have a gastric bypass.  I think that I will have the surgery after 6-12 (after my birthday).

Hopefully everything will be okay.  As long that there is some wine coolers and a pinch of chocolate, I will be fine.

I hate insomnia. I also hate having 300 tv channels and the only thing worth watching was the Royal Wedding.

My sincere wishes for them to have a better marriage than Charles and Di.

And my only complaint is that some of the things that were called Hats looked absolutely ridicules.

My observation of Prince William is that he likes small breasted women, I mean Kate has a small rack.

ShaharThorne -> RE: The Holly and Potty Show (4/29/2011 1:27:12 PM)

I refused to watch the celebration but I do like the wedding dress.  Diana's wedding dress had to have 6 attends(?) to carry the train.  I sew that Kate's train was nice and her sister carried it with no problem.

Got two dogs, (really 3) dogs sleeping around the place. I am wondering is the dogs do go home and paying Lizard for keeping them (and terrorizing Little Bit and banishing Binx from the apartment ).

ShaharThorne -> RE: The Holly and Potty Show (4/29/2011 5:58:19 PM)

The owner of the 2 dogs had to stay an extra day in the hospital so he picked them up today.

Then I got the bills from the doctor and the pathology department...

She can consider herself lucky that her sister isn't Holly [&:]

I still say that Prince William likes small breasted women, Kate aint got much in the way of a rack.

DesFIP -> RE: The Holly and Potty Show (5/1/2011 10:33:35 AM)

So Friday night my daughter calls up at midnight just miserable. The school health center keeps saying she just has a cold. Yesterday she drives to the urgent care to discover they're closed on the weekend. Finally she gives up and went to the ER. The "just a cold" she's seen them three times for turns out to be mononucleosis and a raging sinus infection. She's been given Bioxin for the sinus infection but there's nothing to be done for the mono.

Bad enough she's got tons of work to do before school ends in a week, next weekend is Nationals for IHSA and she's the only one from her school who made it. Good thoughts please, at this point I only hope she doesn't faint and fall off the horse.

outhere69 -> RE: The Holly and Potty Show (5/1/2011 2:15:15 PM)

When I had mono I had a hemoglobin of 7 (instead of 13) and a very enlarged spleen.  I was banned from contact sports and even some of marching band for 6 weeks.  Please, please think hard about her competing.

DesFIP -> RE: The Holly and Potty Show (5/1/2011 4:16:28 PM)

I already have. The ER already told her not to. But this is her only chance to go. The risk is the spleen which is already enlarged. If she doesn't fall off the horse, then she shouldn't get hurt. She's already told her coach that if she does fall, call 911 immediately.

If you were Cam Newton, would you have missed the bowl game? Or A Rod skipping the World Series? Because that's what Nationals is for an equestrian.

If it wasn't two weeks before graduation, she would come home and repeat the semester.

Phoenixpower -> RE: The Holly and Potty Show (5/1/2011 5:50:56 PM)

Best wishes for your daughter DesFIP

jlf1961 -> RE: The Holly and Potty Show (5/1/2011 6:20:40 PM)

Best wishes for your daughter's speedy recovery, AND tell her I said good luck in the nationals.

DesFIP -> RE: The Holly and Potty Show (5/1/2011 7:45:36 PM)

Thanks all. Unfortunately I won't be there. She gets nervous if I watch her compete.

ShaharThorne -> RE: The Holly and Potty Show (5/1/2011 8:51:27 PM)

That is true Des.  Little Bit has the deal of not eating until no one watching her..  I don't usually peek, but at times I do so.

Now, there will be a withdrawal of military from area and maybe my brother does not go through his contract.

calamitysandra -> RE: The Holly and Potty Show (5/2/2011 6:52:58 AM)

Good luck for the competition and the rest of the school work. I hope she will make a speedy recovery.

At the risk of death or at least a major surgical procedure that could leave you more susceptible to infection for the rest of your life?  Yep, I'd skip it.  A pro sports player would be on the DL.

I got mono about 3 weeks prior to graduation and barely made it on time.  I did miss a few events like the prom and the senior trip.  I did some work at home and was able to make up tests in time to get my diploma with everyone else.

soul2share -> RE: The Holly and Potty Show (5/2/2011 11:11:48 PM)

Celeste, I'd have a hard time justifying putting my kid's health at risk for any kind of sporting event, and I'll have you know, I do know how important that event is to an equestrian.....I'm a rider too.

And I also know that it's pretty jarring to the body to put a horse thru it's paces.  An already enlarged organ may not withstand alot of that kind of repetative (SP?) motion.

My sister had mono too....and it was all she could do to get out of bed she was so tired.  She was down for 6 weeks with it.  But I guess everyone's sytem handles it differently.

I do hope she recovers quickly...being sick does suck.  Good luck with her, and if she goes, good luck at the Nationals.

outhere69 -> RE: The Holly and Potty Show (5/3/2011 3:35:25 AM)

As a less serious aside.... I remember the first time I could take a shower after getting mono.  I had to rest against the wall of the shower, and barely made it back to bed but damn, that felt good after all the sweats!  My mom chewed my ass out afterwards since no one was home when I did it.

Each morning she'd leave me 2 quarts of watered down tea for me to drink in a fancy carafe and I would just glare at it most of the day.

I was up at all hours of the night a burning through a lot of books, which made for unrest in the home...especially the night I read a new book in one sitting.  Too bad there wasn't home internet access back then!

Aylee -> RE: The Holly and Potty Show (5/3/2011 3:56:57 PM)

It is a proud day for me!

My little garden is STILL alive AND my neighbor guy complimented me on my home-created anti-rabbit fences! [:)] WOOTELS FOR ME!

Des ~ My best wishes for your daughter for which ever course she takes. Since she is over eighteen it is between her and her coach. I think that you are doing the right thing by letting this be her decision. Good job!
