In past years, you could adopt a family for Christmas and we would pick one that had kids the same age and sex as mine. Made it easier for my kids to pick presents for someone else, and told me what they would like for themselves. But that was courtesy of a store that closed a long time ago. They were always shocked to discover that a little kid like themselves wanted a coat or a blanket for the holidays.

That probably went farther than anything in teaching the spirit of charity.

We did T Day at my sister's like always. The Man was grousing a lot about not having any leftovers so I made a turkey breast and stuffing for dinner. Froze the other half of the breast after deboning it and roasted the bones. I have soup cooking now. Am looking forward to homemade turkey soup a lot.

you're ahead of the pack, i'd think, then aylee. lotsa people seem to have such vague ideas that there is a deeper meaning beyond gifts and what they want.

the fact that you're concerned about ways of reinforcing this attitude to life in your daughter at her young age says much about your goodness as a mother well done.

Awww!  Thanks!  *blush*

Actually I figure that this is the best age to start.  3 year olds are pretty friendly and mostly willing to share.  I just figure that it is time to start explaining some of this stuff.  Especially since her new CONSTANT phrase is, "What are you doing?"

Hey there!

Just looking at several sites in Austin for a microwave oven because Bo needs a new one (if he could just listen to me and find the fuse...)

Not to sound like a completely heartless mother, but Butterhead is an only child at this time.  I want to make sure that she understands that it is not always about "her."

Just because the TV is on does not mean that it is always a show for her. (Don't get me wrong, we do keep in mind that she is in the room for whatever is being watched.)
Just because we buy something, does not mean it is for her.
Not everything is hers to play with.
Yadda yadda.

I think that allowing a child to grow up believing that the world revolves around them and what they want does them a dis-service.

Since she was about 6 months old, she has come with me on trips for canned food deliveries and other types of charity things.  As well as taking gifts to friends.

The only real drawback that I have found is that she keeps sharing her food with the dogs.

But yes, I agree that learning about charity and giving has to start at home with what the parents do.  Which is why I like Santa.  Learning that YOU can give that wonderfully feeling that you get from something to someone else.

If any of that made sense.

Sounds great and I hope that your soup turns out wonderfully!

My best suggestion is for you to just do it yourself and stop waiting for him.

My son just picked up the habits by going with me to places, and also, since he was in Scouts, he also participated in the food drives and things that they do.  And his school and church also had big drives for Christmas.  I do know that I simply explained to him that there were times when some families just didn't have the money for things they needed, let alone things they wanted, and that we should always try to help year around, not just at Christmas.  I don't know...Santa wasn't a big tradition in my family.....it was more like letting him see the satisfaction one gets from knowing that you've done something without expecting anything in return.  I do remember that Vincent never really appreciated going to see Santa.....men in beards really frightened him for some reason, and the first time I took him to see Santa, he screamed like he was being chased by the devil himself.....I was afraid the poor kid had been traumatized!  Come to think of it, he did the same thing w/Chuckie Cheese......

I try to go to the place where the Salvation Army has their angel tree, and snag a tag or two.  Unfortunately, I'm not in a position to be able to do as much as I have in the past, but I have tried to pay forward some of the help I've gotten from places right after I lost my job and found myself in a precarious position.  I have gotten toys at the Dollar Tree to donate, I know they aren't much, but I do what I can.  And I always support food drives and pantries.

Then there was the time 2 years ago when my bike got stolen right before Christmas....the guys and gals at work chipped in to buy me a new one, so the money I had earmarked for the new bike went to the Angel tree kids I'd pulled tags for.  I was able to get them clothing, and for the little girl, I got her a doll.  Also some children's books, but mostly clothing.  Then I let everyone at work know that their kindness towards me had paid off for them too!  It was nice  knowing that someplace, a couple of kids had a nice Christmas after all.

And Tiger, no stories.....but what did Holly do?  I didn't see any stories about the banking system crashing because she melted a charge card or two......

I won't go near a store now unless I can go at 3 am.  Most of the lunatics should be sleeping by then!

You mean you have never seen the parents with the children running amok hyped on sugar from the pound bag of M&Ms they are eating?

You are lucky.

No, Aylee, not at 3 am around here...but what really pisses me off are the parents who take the kids to walmart at bedtime, IN THEIR PJ's, and having to listen to the tired little brats whine and throw their tantrums......why the hell can't ONE parent and the brats stay home?  Why do they want to do that to the poor kids?????  Makes me want to smack the damn parents upside the head......maybe knock some sense INTO them.

Ummm . . . I have taken Butterhead to the store in her jammies before.

It was not at her bedtime (I am not insane.)  But there was a morning I needed to run out and get doggie food and she really wanted to come along.  So I put her coat and shoes on her and loaded her up in the car.

I even have a pic.  I will send it to you.

I know Aylee, but the last time I looked at the microwave, the turntable was not rotating and the inside looked like a war was in it (I think it was a couple of tomatoes).

Just a lot easier to get a new one and send the old one on its final journey...

At least it not the computer...or the mini-book...or the TV...

I would hogtie the kids and have the M&Ms all to myself...

Mom has not find the stash yet...

That is groovy.  I was mostly commenting on the waiting for him to do it part.

I'd stay home with the m & m's if I had my druthers. I have to make a list of what to get people. My daughter made hers. She wants a black cardigan and a car charger for her phone and a pair of sneakers but that she'll need to come try on. The Man needs gloves, again. I know we've bought him gloves every year for the last four and he's lost them all. Again. Plus he needs a lap desk.

I need a new sudoko book. My son wants a coat from the Polo outlet shop.

The teen wants

Bo works 14+ hours a day, taking public transportation.  He is dead tired when he comes home and makes dinner.  When I get down there, I usually get the hamburger helpers and other quick meals so he can take a break.  When ordering Chinese, I get him a pu-pu platter and some of my house fried rice with extra meats.

He needs to take a break and I think he got it this weekend.  on Feb 7th, I am taking the "family" to either Buffet Palace or Golden corral for dinner.  Bo is SOL because of his schedule.

Have you considered like a Kohl's gift card for the sneakers?

And I love seeing practical gift lifts!

She wants the Reebok's that make you work out while you walk. Since there's a huge outlet mall near here, I'll take her and my son down and let them pick out the ones that fit. He's 6' and maybe 150 lbs soaking wet so finding things that fit properly is tough. Oh well there's a great tailor in town.

Aylee, she's adorable!

I love to give gift cards too.....the kids always thought it was cool to go shopping to get their own stuff.  And I now what a pain in the arse returning stuff can be!  As a rule, I don't buy clothes for anyone without having them there to try things on.  About the only things I'll get for anyone is t-shirts.

Celeste, have you considered getting your man those gloves/mittens on a string?  Run 'em thru the sleeves, he'll never lose them again....unless he loses his coats too?
