I guess it depends what you mean by birds of a feather... externally my friends have been very different... different sexual orientations, different music tastes, different religions, different ages etc. My best friend in college and I were very different in almost every way, yet somehow we just clicked. She was straight, I was queer. She was cool, I was a dork. She liked hip-hop, I liked 80's latin rock and musicals. She had good fashion sense, I had no fashion sense. She came from a large family, I'm an only child. You'd think we wouldn't get along, but if you put us together we could entertain each other for hours on end. I think ultimately the only "feathers" I'm looking for in a friend is that they are sincere, caring, and have a good sense of humor. I only have one close friend (that I know of) who is at all interested in kink, and I only found that out in the past few months.
I do sometimes have trouble making friends with someone who is uber-conservative, especially when almost all aspects of my identity are at loggerheads with their beliefs. However, if they are willing to be my friend and not try to change me, then I'm willing to be their friend and not try to change them. This has worked to some degree with my relatives... then again, none of them know that I'm into women (much less BDSM).

I never know exactly how I end up around some people-it's usually to do with art.

Friends are Friends.  For many people the difference simply do not matter, only thing that matters is what they have in common, the friendship itself.

I don't know how I'd categorise my friends other than saying their all slightly mental (regardless of being gay/straight/bi/transgendered/into BDSM/vanilla/one-eyed, one-horned, flying purple people-eaters)  I love them very dearly as I am geographically separated from my family due to work and as a single mother it's nice to have my mates to rely on if I need help (I'm the worst DIY person in the world, so the fact other people know how to fix stuff *really* helps)

I can't imagine selecting people only from or not from 'the lifestyle' (for want of a phrase that doesn't sound stupid) it would be really odd......

We can't learn and grow if we only associate with those who share our outlook and opinions.  Diverse friends are essential to being really alive.

If you want a friend who is not mental, consider me- the voices tell me I'm perfectly normal!!
