Gaining ground this political season is a proposed League of Democracies designed to strengthen support for the next president's overseas agenda and ensure a global leadership role for the United States.

John McCain, the virtually certain Republican presidential nominee, has endorsed the concept of a new global compact of more than 100 democratic countries to advance shared views and has discussed the idea with French and British leaders.

"It could act where the U.N. fails to act," he said last month, and pressure tyrants "with or without Moscow's and Beijing's approval."

"With or without Moscow or Beijing's approval": how divisive of him. This shows that it's in McCain's populist interest to propagate the old East/West divide, as if Russia and China were less worthy than the club of "democracies" he's trying to form.

PS: "Virtually certain Republican nominee"? I thought it was a done deal!

I don't know if they're "less worthy", but they're certainly less democratic, currently. Having said that, I'm not sure if I support the idea of a new organization.

Come on now.

But yeah, let's ostracize Yoko.

Does this mean we will be able to invade Zimbabwe and bring democracy?

If so, will we take any lessons from the Iraq "democratisation programme", to apply in this case?

If this new league will enable such by circumventing the objections of UN Security Council members, how were we able to invade Iraq without it?

In other words, what's the point again?

If you see something that you believe needs to be done, and there are a couple of yahoos that continually get in the way, what would you do?

See, you post a serious thread, you make a cryptic statement, I ask you to clarify, so you decide to hop into the shower ? But that won't do, that won't do at all!

Have a good one.

I have a different issue with all of this.  NATO started out well.  The UN has sucked since day one.  So we make another organization of countries to ally with that will totally frack us at some point.  Gee lets give bank robbers guns at the doors to the banks why don't we.

Okay. What needs to be done..... seriously, McCain would need to answer that, kittin, and there are some possible answers, in the article.

I tend to think that we should keep trying to make the UN work, and keep the option of acting on our own availible, if need be.

Thats the nature of such associations though IK - they work as long as everyone involved sees things the same way, and when those involved dont see things the same way, they break down and everyone feels betrayed.

McCain might be annoyed at the Russians and Chinese seeing things differently in the UN - and account that to their lack of democracy; how will it be accounted when half of Europe sees things differently in this new League?

That is why I am against any more such organizations.  If we need a group to provide endless debate and then to act ten years after it needs to, we have the UN.  If we need a group to tell us that they won't support us for some foolish mission or another, we have NATO now that we have angered most of those in that group.  Does McCain just need more asses to kiss?

Thats more or less my view too IK.

Lets say half of Europe, the US, India and Australia wanted to intervene in Burma - given the Iraq experience, what is to stop us exactly? The Chinese and Russians might get pissed over it, but they got pissed over Iraq too and we still did it. We didnt need any special fixed organisation to do it.

Sounds to me like "jobs for the boys" again, with "perks for some other boys" thrown in - ie, "lets go do this and tell the electorate its for some grand and noble moral reason, but rip a few billion out of it for ourselves, all legitimately"

This is a bad idea. I'm betting McCain knows that and is using it to talk good will to the international community without saying anything nice about the UN which is a hot button with a segment of his political supporters.

First of all we work closely with non democratic nations on a whole host of subjects, China helps us negotiate with North Korea amongst other examples, and we disagree quite strongly with many democracies. Germany and France bitterly opposed the Iraq invasion, India, under the hindu fundamentalist party a few years back, came very close to war with Pakistan and China despite our strong objections.

Fundamentally we need to improve how the UN functions and a place to start is ending the Non-aligned movement. We can't do it by force or by threat of force. We need to establish that the us vs. them mindset that has made the UN GA so irrelevant  has not done the NAM nations any good and has done the world much wrong.
