How do I know? I start having anxiety attacks and become really paranoid. I become confrontational and edgy. I yell alot and lose my temper. None of these things are typical of me, so if I'm experiencing them on a regular basis, I'm like "houston, we have a problem." I also have physical symptoms--including hyper-alertness and hyper-vigilence, numbing sensations in my lips, absolutely flat affect like I'm a ghost. A couple years ago, I came really close to the edge and stood there for probably a year and a half. The thing that convinced me I needed help was I saw double for a couple hours one afternoon. Fortunately, I had a friend in mental health, and she held my hand through the whole thing. The one thing that arrested my break down was making phone calls to get help. The very asking for help--explaining what I thought the problem was to a whole bunch of people, having a focus and a series of tasks to complete--encouraged a centering process that allowed me to regain enough control to get by in the short term, until I could get into counseling. (My issues are post-trauma related and the best thing I've found is talking because its through talking that we integrate disturbing experiences.)
