Old news...

Of course, that the "You say Quran, I say Koran" urges its followers to use rape victims and homosexuals as targets is meaningless.

FangsNfeet -> RE: PTSD and BAGHDAD (AP) - An American soldier used a Quran, the Islamic holy book, for target practice (5/22/2008 9:04:41 PM)

I'm not thinking PTSD at all.

I realize there's frustration but the action is still childish and was a bad move. Terrorist will us it against us.

PTSD is very much an ongoing concern -- both in the military and civilian populations.

Irishknight -> RE: PTSD and BAGHDAD (AP) - An American soldier used a Quran, the Islamic holy book, for target practice (5/22/2008 9:35:04 PM)

While it is a valid concern, it is also used as a cop out at times.  Just like many other illnesses, people want to try to use it to avoid the blame for what they did.  After the last election there were people trying to claim ptsd from the election process.
That kind of crap is ridiculous.

I grew up in a house with a man suffering from ptsd from Vietnam.  My father would have traumatic dreams and flashbacks and would occasionally revert to thinking he was still in nam.  I watched him struggle through something that the government didn't even want to acknowledge existed for years.  Having grown up with it, I get kind of sick of people using it as a blanket excuse.  If this soldier actually has ptsd, which I doubt, then he should be treated.   If not, he should be disciplined for making life harder for every other soldier there.

kdsub -> RE: PTSD and BAGHDAD (AP) - An American soldier used a Quran, the Islamic holy book, for target practice (5/22/2008 9:50:26 PM)

I wonder how many American soldiers pick up a Quran each day to worship...I'll bet a lot more then use it for target practice.. Maybe Al Jazeera should do a story on that...when pigs fly

Honestly, who cares.  There are plenty of Islamic people that use women as target practice with stones simply because they didn't conform to their super strict society.  If you ask me, mutlilating female genitalia is ten times worse than shooting a book.  Freedom of religion in this country doesn't mean we have to respect said religion.  There are plenty of normal people in this country that don't respect Christianity anymore and work to destroy things like Christmas that have been around since this country was founded.

Complete this phrase with the relevant word (clue, its a religion)

Have you read the bible lately? As Chomsky rightly put it, “The Bible is one of the most genocidal books in history”

Haven't you heard of American fundemental christians (and some not so fundemental) riling against homosexuals? We have over here.

Pot, kettle, black, etc.

I understand your meaning but the truth is, many people are actually starting to do the research for themselves.  Both christians and non are beginning to realize that Christmas is a pagan holiday colored by the early church with christian trappings to recruit pagans.  It actually has nothing to dowith the birth of christ.   Nobody is out to destroy it.  They are merely beginning to see the truth of it and some don't want to honor pagan traditions.  I respect their right not to engage in Yule traditions for their beliefs.  Why do other christians find that so bad?
If you are referring to people beginning to take offense at christian symbols on public property, why is that such a problem?  Most christians would have a shit fit if I put up pagan religious symbols on public property.  It is as much my right to not have to step around a plastic Jesus to get a new driver's license as it is yours to not have to see a 6 foot statue of Cernunnos, the ancient Celtic nature god.  Not forcing your particular religion down other people's throats is not th same as having someone destroy your religion.  Its the way it is supposed to be in this country.

DomAviator -> RE: PTSD and BAGHDAD (AP) - An American soldier used a Quran, the Islamic holy book, for target practice (5/23/2008 9:30:22 AM)

PTSD is a psychobabble bullshit term used by whiney malcontents to try to obtain benefits beyond what they were paid by the military. Frankly, I neither know nor care how many people I killed during my military service - but Im sure its in the thousands if not the tens of thousands. I went up with up to 18,000 pounds of miscellanious and assorted things that go boom hanging off the hard points and I came back with them empty.  Trap , then while they refuel and rearm me, Id go take a piss, grab a soda and a sandwich, debrief, brief for the next strike, pop a go pill and back off into the night to do it again. The last night of the Gulf war, when we were cleaning up the retreat on the highways of death I didnt even get out of the plane to piss - we would whiz in a botle and hand it down to the plane captain. Our ordnance loads that night were "whatevers closest" so if the redshirt was waiting for 250 pounders to come from the magazine and there were 1000 pounders on the flight deck it was like FUCK IT HANG THOSE ON ME! COME ON I GOTTA GO!!!!!!!!! I GOT PLACES TO GO, THINGS TO DO, (Slur) TO KILL!!!! So, we were dropping 1000 pound bombs on stalled cars... The ONLY concern that night was that every second the redshirts held us up the Air Force and Army was killing some of OUR (racial slur for muslims).  When it was all over, and the last trap was made and the last set of wheels chocked... we had a blowout! High fiving, back slapping, "holy shit did you see...." stories, laughter , merriment, much joy and happiness and in a few of the ready rooms the booze (which is forbidden contraband on Navy ships) came out! There was no TRAUMA that was our JOB and we loved the work.... This was what we trained for, this is why we blew up all those plywood targets in Nevada.... We were like the football player who finally got off the bench and got into the game. It wasnt "traumatic" at all we wanted to fight.

My dad was about as salty as they come, a lifer Master Chief and he didnt have any PTSD either... Nobody I know has anything approaching PTSD.... Its a job, you do your job you follow your training and you come home.... PTSD os for candy asses looking for a VA check cause they think they are entitled to something beyond what they were paid and their standard bennies.I didnt even use most of my bennies, because I got PLENTY from the military already. Great job training, life long friendships with some awesome guys, great memories of unspeakable nights whorehouses and bars around the world, lifetime membership in Tailhook, its an experience I wouldnt trade for the world...  I am sooooooooooooooo glad I went in, otherwise I would have been using my engineering degree and here at age 40 I would be sitting in an office looking at maps and calculating porosity and mud weights while earning a fraction of what I do now while bored out of my mind wearing a pocket protector... The military is good to you but you get out what you put in...

...ok, i have enormous respect for your military experience et al, but the above line is utter bs. Go tell a survivor of rape in an orphanage that PTSD doesn't exist. Not all psychological conditions can only be seen in a military context. PTSD exists, it is a measurable problem. To merely dismiss it as psychobabble is enormously ignorant.

So shoot a Bible then. It is and should be protected free speech. There is no doubt in my mind that there are millions of human beings who feel they have every justification for doing so.

LadyEllen -> RE: PTSD and BAGHDAD (AP) - An American soldier used a Quran, the Islamic holy book, for target practice (5/23/2008 1:26:30 PM)

The weird thing is though FDD, I, a "filthy heathen" have six Bibles; five of them the former cherished possessions of elderly patients of my ex, who were happy for me to look after them when they passed. And despite my feelings about the "foreign cult" I do so.

The other weird thing is that one of my friends, another "filthy heathen", found a Koran in the street, all written in Arabic. He took it to the Mosque and was thanked profusely for looking after it and bringing it to them. They explained that the book itself is worthless - but the words it contains make it priceless to them.

How come some dont get it?

Yes it is originally a pagan holiday, as are most of our holidays in this country, that doesn't mean that Christmas isn't associated with Christianity now.  It isn't about people not wanting to celebrate a pagan holiday, it's about saying that people are no longer free to celebrate such holidays as they see fit.  Schools are getting rid of Christmas break and calling it "Winter Break" now.  People can no longer put up Christmas decorations because they are "offensive" to other people.  Bullshit! It's all about other people forcing their beliefs or non-beliefs on other people.  Those of us who want to put up decorations in our offices should be allowed to do so, it's called Freedom of Speech.

We are supposed to value the freedom to do what we want as long as it does not harm another human being.  If people get pissed off because someone shoots the Quran or the Bible or whatever it is because they see that object as not able to hold itself up without others defending it.  Don't turn religious texts into Idols, we are all supposed to worship God, Alah, whoever, not a physical object.
