Living near SF, I've met all too many "lifestyle people". A few are cool, but many are rather pathetic. There are people who take this stuff far too seriously. The ones who show up at a kinky nightclub with more equipment cases than some bands, for example. The ones who give themselves titles ("Master", "Sir", etc.) and take them seriously just come across as pompous fools. Most of the people involved are not very successful outside the scene.
The pros who do it for money seem to be more grounded, and can see the humor in all this. I know three successful bondage actresses, and they all have a mischevious wit and the timing for stand-up comedy. (Strippers, though, tend to be tragic figures.)
A friend of mine tried a few years back to move the SF kinky scene upscale, throwing some huge parties with a strict dress code. The events were fun, but didn't bring in a more upscale crowd - just the usual kinky crowd from other cities. She gave it up a few years back.
Some of this is an SF thing. The LA kinky crowd is more successful, with many people from film and TV. At LA events, you meet people who have interesting lives outside of kink.
The "online kink" crowd is far worse. They're just out of touch with reality.
