Level -> Bob Barr aiming for Libertarian nod for Presidential campaign (5/12/2008 4:35:58 PM)

quote:

WASHINGTON -- Former Republican Rep. Bob Barr is expected to announce that he's running for president as a Libertarian.

His candidacy would be a wild card in the White House race that many believe would hurt Republican Sen. John McCain.

Barr had scheduled a news conference Monday. He first must win the Libertarian nomination at the party's national convention that begins May 22. Party officials consider him a front-runner thanks to the national profile he developed as a Georgia congressman from 1995 to 2003.

Barr, 59, helped lead Bill Clinton's impeachment. He quit the Republican Party two years ago, saying he had grown disillusioned with its failure to shrink government and its willingness to scale back civil liberties in fighting terrorism

I am a little skeptical of Barr's libertarian credentials.  He was a big proponent of the Drug War.  Although he has reversed his position medical marijuana, he still opposes legalizing recreational drugs.  He tried to get the Pentagon to ban the practice of Wicca in the military.  I have never heard him reverse that position.  He is a big state's rights guy, but that's not exactly libertarianism.

Did you happen to see Bob Barr's cameo appearence in the movie Borat ? Pretty funny. Not sure he's presidential timber.

My main memory of him is as one of the ringleaders of Clinton's impeachment. He has never struck me as a "freedom fighter" in the Libertarian mode. [8|]

No.....He's not a true '' freedom fighter '' in the Libertarian mode..... But he is true to the old school principles of ''true fiscal conservative'' idealism. And that's reason enough to hurt McCain if he's allowed any media exposure.

Barr holds a lot of big government social conservative stick governments nose into other peoples business positions.

Unless I missed his retractions he:
Opposes same sex marriage.
Opposes full legalization of maijuana
Opposes abortion
Opposes free practice of religion

So will the Libertarian Party nominate a man whose only real position in agreement with the party is his stated opposition to the 16th ammendment?

A 'Twue libertarian', with 'credentials', passing the 'Libertarian enough test'?
Come on guys, these irony meters ain't cheap. [sm=anger.gif]

Hell, if I decide to throw a protest vote, this year, their candidate just might get it.

Owner59 -> RE: Bob Barr aiming for Libertarian nod for Presidential campaign (5/12/2008 10:14:24 PM)

So when did Barr start smoking pot?

He`s an un-principled selfish bore with nothing to offer.

If this goes down,it will diminish, even ruin the Libs.

They best beware.

cyberdude611 -> RE: Bob Barr aiming for Libertarian nod for Presidential campaign (5/12/2008 10:16:40 PM)

Well....

Can you really say Barr is any worse than the three stooges running right now?

Archer -> RE: Bob Barr aiming for Libertarian nod for Presidential campaign (5/12/2008 10:48:37 PM)

Thus far he's getting my vote, tossing away a protest vote based on party platform rather than any individual merit.
Non of the crew has enough to merit my vote based on personal merit so I'm left with two things a protest vote against the limited two big party system, and a vote for a platform to send the message that I think the other parties both lacking in planks in their platforms I support.

After the 2000 election was finally thrown to Bush by the Supreme Court the Republicans had a party in D.C. There was a video of Barr doing a "Springtime For Hitler" song & dance that is my fondest memory of him. There is also his "Clinton is a degenerate" speech, this from a man who's 3 ex-wives say he was a cheater. Denial is not just a river in Egypt.

kittinSol -> RE: Bob Barr aiming for Libertarian nod for Presidential campaign (5/13/2008 5:31:58 AM)

BB: never heard of him until now. Is he cool? If he's a libertarian, he can't be... why do these fuckwads come in at the eleventh hour just to ruin it for everybody else [8D] ?

The protest vote is always my vote.

Hmmmmmmmm one wuld think that the idea of adding a third party bringing the election more in line with the eutopia of europe would find you thrilled with the idea.

And 11th hour???????? the primaries are not over yet the actual campaining is only just about to get started in earnest, there's still 5 months to the election.

kittinSol -> RE: Bob Barr aiming for Libertarian nod for Presidential campaign (5/13/2008 6:14:17 AM)

How does one give lessons in irony over the internet [8|] ? (And Europe, a utopia? Dream on :-) .

cyberdude611 -> RE: Bob Barr aiming for Libertarian nod for Presidential campaign (5/13/2008 11:57:01 AM)

He could get a fair number of protest votes of people who dont like McCain or Obama.

Barr is mostly a conservative but he does make sense on most issues. He's in favor of abolishing the IRS and income tax and replacing tax revenue with a national sales tax. He favors cutting federal spending and balancing the budget. He believes the US should adopt a foreign policy of non-intervention but continue to favor defense spending, only going to war when attacked. And he wants to secure the borders.

But yes, the one big knock against him is that he was one of the main people behind the Clinton impeachment.

Owner59 -> RE: Bob Barr aiming for Libertarian nod for Presidential campaign (5/13/2008 12:19:47 PM)

He`s a neo-con meddler with no business near the reins of power.

He was Newtie`s waterboy and chief char actor assassin, all the while he was having an affair(s).

Trying to get Wicca abolished in the military is creepy and shows what kind of kook he is.Not open minded or contemporary but rather petty.

I`m surprised he`s getting any consideration.

If you want a throw-a-way vote,errr,...protest vote; vote for Nader. He`s running and did a great job of helping Bush get elected. He might help Bush,errr,....McCain get elected in '08'.

SeeksOnlyOne -> RE: Bob Barr aiming for Libertarian nod for Presidential campaign (5/13/2008 12:30:55 PM)

having lived in bobs district here in ga for many years, i can say this.  he is a politician to the core.  that alone is enough for me not to vote for him.

but he also made me mad on a personal level back in 99, so that may color my opinion of him.

we need better choices.

Archer -> RE: Bob Barr aiming for Libertarian nod for Presidential campaign (5/13/2008 1:16:56 PM)

Considering the party platform the Greens are way outside of the picture for me.
BTW Owner that may end up being Cynthia Mckinney who is a candidate for the Green Party nomination and is leading Nader by a good margin. 167 to 113 delegates according to the Green Party website.
Talk about a moonbat McKinney makes clowns look serious.
