I have observed on many Forums that, when one starts a thread which links to a news item, one generally makes a comment about it. As in, you know, something like, "I disagree with the BBC article. What do you all think?" On CM, evidently, some sort of comment isn't deemed necessary. Example: thread topic: REALLY IMPORTANT NEWS! body of post: Bicycles have two wheels. SO? Get my point?
