KCherry -> Video Killing the Net? (4/29/2008 7:54:35 PM)

Some speculate that the amount of video being DL'ed to the net could consume it within 2 years time.

Let me make the point that you seem to have missed.

I have observed on many Forums that, when one starts a thread which links to a news item, one generally makes a comment about it. As in, you know, something like, "I disagree with the BBC article. What do you all think?"

On CM, evidently, some sort of comment isn't deemed necessary.

Example: thread topic: REALLY IMPORTANT NEWS!
body of post: Bicycles have two wheels.
     SO?

Get my point?

The article was based on a report by ATT.

It's from their propaganda department.

One of the things they want to do is charge different prices for different services on the net i.e. they are not a big believer in "net neutraility".

As well, ATT is now starting to become the big "Ma Bell" that it use to be, and is starting to exhibit the same monopoly behavior.

(fast reply)

Personally, I'm hoisting the bullshit flag.  Fiber was incredibly overbuilt in the '90s and it's going to take a good while to use it up.  Plus there are perpetual upgrades to compression algorithms.

Copper isn't really faster than copper.  Electricity (what travels over copper)  travels at nearly the speed of light (what travels over fiber) and we don't process data anywhere remotely close to the speed of light.  Fiber simply allows for more individual circuits in a smaller space.  Video is a speed issue and congestion issue on individual circuits.
