Life expectancy has long been growing steadily for most Americans. But it has not for a significant minority, according to a new study, which finds a growing disparity in mortality depending on race, income and geography.

The study, published Monday in the online journal PLoS, analyzed life expectancy in all 3,141 counties in the United States from 1961 to 1999, the latest year for which complete data have been released by the National Center for Health Statistics. Although life span has generally increased since 1961, the authors reported, it began to level off or even decline in the 1980s for 4 percent of men and 19 percent of women.

“It’s very troubling that there are parts of the wealthiest country in the world, with the highest health spending in the world, where health is getting worse,” said Majid Ezzati, the lead author and an associate professor of international health at Harvard. It is a phenomenon, he added, “unheard of in any other developed country.”

That certainly plays a role in it, KC.

For some the economy is coming up roses.

The rest will be pushing up daisies.

Gee, it wouldn't have anything to do with people being fatter and less active nowadays? Nah, that couldn't be it.

How about that we have an aging population that has become increasingly unhealthy?

People not having health insurance is not a new phenomenon in America...it's been that way for a long time.

But if you look at trends you see diabetes on the rise, heart disease on the rise, and obesity on the rise. That's why life expectancy is going down. People are not healthy and they are not healthy because they have too much stress in their lives and they dont eat right.

Preventative care is not a specialty here. The obvious don't smoke, use the same needle or have unprotected sex aside there are a lot of people who don't receive care because they don't have insurance.  Adults do not go to the doctor unless its absolutely necessary find themselves waiting until they are in excruciating pain and wind up in the emergency room. Hospitals no longer want to handle those patients because they do not have the ability to pay.

I don't think its going to get better either.

That's been how it works from day one.  Wasn't the average life expectancy 62-63, when the original retirement age was set at 65?  If you want to retire in some comfort, be smart with your money, rather than figuring the government will handle the bills with a pittance they'll dole out.

If I had to guess I'd say we eat worse, are higher stressed, and are contending with more carcinogens.

Its probably largely because you have a government that doesn't recognize that having a duty of care towards its citizens is any of its business.

(unless it involves tanks, missiles and war ships of course.)

Forty countries, including Cuba, Taiwan and most of Europe had lower infant mortality rates than the U.S. in 2004. The U.S. rate was 6.8 deaths for every 1,000 live births. It was 13.7 for Black Americans, the same as Saudi Arabia.

“It really reflects the social conditions in which African American women grow up and have children,” said Dr. Marie C. McCormick, professor of maternal and child health at the Harvard School of Public Health. “We haven’t done anything to eliminate those disparities.”

1980s for 4 percent of men and 19 percent of women.

blame the drugs, sex (std's) & rock 'n' roll! shit, i miss the eighties!
***********

poor diet, little to no exercise & bad habits probably have alot to do with the decline in age expectancy - just my opinion.

If you want to grow older move to the midwest.  We don't even have a donut shop here.  The right person could make a killing, that is if they didn't mind their entire career would be making donuts.

As far as that goes we don't even have a bakery outside of a grocery store.  Ever eat a grocery store made donut?...ewww.

Anyway, for whatever reason whether it be donuts or lack of or whatever.  People seem to grow much older and still be alive around these parts.  In California I rarely heard of anyone living to 80..let alone the 90's to 100's here.
Dougs grandmother is still alive.  She just celebrated her 93rd and the assisted living home will kill her before any health issue.  About a year ago she came down with type 2 diabetes..other than that she is healthier than I am.

this is exactly what is explained in the movie sicko.  people all around the world where health care is covered by the gov't live much longer lives.  even the super poor people live longer because free health care.

in france you get free health care, free college education, and a free nanny.  among other things.  how can a poor person survive in america?  they dont.

you also have a huge obesity rate in america.  its probably higher than most countries.

you have also people working 2 or even 3 jobs which causes major stress factors and shitty social life.  these are usually people who are paying off student loans and such.  you'd think with a good education that they have that this kind of thing wouldnt happen.

your economy sucks..period.  your dollar also sucks...

here in canada..im on disability.  its 1000 per month + free dental and health and drugs. but do you know how hard it is to get that in the usa?? OMG...forget it basically.

so i sure as hell could not live there with my health getting worse by the year.  due to my heart condition.  plus drugs are a HELL of alot more expensive in usa than most countries.  for instance...i take hormones.  it costs me $28 for them but its over $100 in the states just for one of my meds.  some people have to get more than one prescription per month of the same drug!!!  imagine if i was in usa getting 1000k, rent would be atleast 400, then food, then things like electricity, cable tv..etc..  it wouldnt be possible!

since im still a citizen of france i have often thought of moving there.  it sounds so much better  than even where i am at...and women with french accents = HAWT.

Yeah obviously the fact that we didn't have universal healthcare prior to the trend either means that universal healthcare is the reason for the declines. An unchanged factor is rarely found to be the problem causing an change.

The article mentions Obesity as one of the 3 major causes, obease poor something very counter intuitive about that.
Oesity leading to Diabeties being a large part of that increase compounding the problem for women.

BTW did you notice that this change is far disproportionately women? 11 counties showed decreases for men and 180 counties it dropped for women?
So obesity seems to be at the heart of this problem.
