There are guranteed to be skeletons in every family somewhere in your ancestory. I did my family tree a few years back & I found some direct ancestors were hung for sheep rustling. So do I now avoid large parts of rural Wales. It's best to just pretend they don't exist.

There were also slave owners who were actually kind to their slaves...Doesn't alter the fact that they were willing participants in a corrupt, economic system that devalued all African American human life and owned people contrary to their will just because they could. Just offering a reality check. MNN P.S. I don't think the OP is saying she feels responsible for the behavior of her family members...I think she's simply expressing her justified feelings of shock, disappointment and maybe even embarrassment. But I didn't hear her say she felt responsible for their bad choices.

you shouldn't be too ashamed of an ancestor that did his best to ensure the power is kept in the hands of his decendants. if that's the case, you could add columbus, alexander the greek, cortez, the colonists, the pope, rhodes to the list of shameful ancestors. be proud. if it weren't for your uncle, you wouldn't have the lifestyle you enjoy so much.
