Chaos Theory:
"The term stemmed from his 1972 academic paper "Predictability: Does the Flap of a Butterfly's Wings in Brazil Set off a Tornado in Texas?"--Google News

Would someone please dumb this down for me, say to a fifth gr---third grade level?

~Tee, who was in the basement last week due to tornado warnings...damn butterflies.

The example of the violent butterfly is a publicity tactic. Nothing more.
Modern physics is in a bit of  a mess so one more absurdity wont do much harm.

Well, thank you Seeks, that was...interesting. [;)]

p.s. I'm begging you to change your "aviator" pic. Begging.

FullCircle -> RE: Edward Lorenz, Father of Chaos Theory, Dies (4/17/2008 1:35:35 PM)

If only seeks hadn't put that wig on Mr Lorenz would still be around today. I'd like to take this opportunity to blame all bad things that happen on the fact seeks choose to wear that wig. I hope you can live with yourself seeks. We must all be so careful these days of what we wear or our fashion sense could have unforeseen effects. I call this theory Ugly Bastard theory UBT. I’ve done extensive computer modelling to prove the ‘blue and green with nothing in-between’ rule.

Spaghetti.  You don't serve spaghetti in pubs due to Chaos Theory.

Well subtee if you put like that, begging I mean, how could I refuse ?

By the way not sure whether you know but aviators fly aeroplanes.
avatars (sp?) are well I'm not sure but they dont get off the ground.

subtee: just read your Valentine's day blog.
Cheer up gal you have plenty going for you I am sure it will all work out sooner or later.

subtee -> RE: Edward Lorenz, Father of Chaos Theory, Dies (4/17/2008 2:23:29 PM)

Huh.

Well, I can see that I guess, what with the potential mess and the sauce everywhere and the noodles sticking on the walls. Might create an avalanche in Peru or a Tsnumami in Sweden, is that what you're saying here?

cjan -> RE: Edward Lorenz, Father of Chaos Theory, Dies (4/17/2008 2:23:51 PM)

I wannaknow...is there a sense of humor under that fright wig, and are those authentic avatar shades ?

That was irony derived from the other thread in which someone called them aviators, hence the little quote marks.

The Butterfly Effect

(by David Hernanadez)

If a butterfly flapping its wings in Beijing
could cause a hurricane off the coast of Florida,
so could a deck of cards shuffled at a picnic.
So could the clapping hands of a father
watching his son rounding the bases,
the wind sculpting his baggy pants.
So could a woman reading a book of poems,
a tiny current from a turned page
slipping out the open window, nudging
a passing breeze: an insignificant event
that could snowball months later into a monsoon
at a coastal village halfway around the world.
Palm trees bowing on the shore.
Grass huts disintegrating like blown dandelions.

Hard to believe, but when I rewind my life,
starting from a point when my heart
was destroyed by a hurricane of grief,
I see the dominoes rising, how that storm
was just a gale weeks earlier, a gust
days before that. Finally I see where it all began.
I say hello to a woman sitting alone
at the bar, a tattoo butterfly perched
on her ankle, ready to reek havoc.

I guessed that your literary sweetness lol
I am sensitive you know, see my response to your blog.

Oh, so about my Valentines day journal, you realize that was...

nevermind.

Have I missed the point then ?

I'm beginning to think subtee is patronising me.
I'm a simple son of the soil.

Angelika that was really cool and, perhaps ironically, has proven the most enlightening so far. Thank you for posting it.

(No stanzas about spaghetti, huh?)

subtee -> RE: Edward Lorenz, Father of Chaos Theory, Dies (4/17/2008 3:07:00 PM)

Of course you are. "Simple." Yes. ~cough~

angelikaJ -> RE: Edward Lorenz, Father of Chaos Theory, Dies (4/17/2008 3:09:59 PM)

I am glad you liked it.

for the nerds here:
Chaotic (aka nonlinear) systems are exquisetley sensitive to initial conditions.  An incredibly small offset in the initial conditions will induce large variations from the original simulation.  The "butterfly effect" proposes that a the breeze from the butterfly's wings eventually causes severe weather halfway around the world.

Nonlinear systems theory helped solve previously intractable problems in a wide variety of sciences; fluid dynamics, atmospheric sciences, electrical engineering, and cardiology are only a few.

James Glieck has a good book on it that doesn't beat you to death with the math stick.

You don't serve spaghetti in pubs because of the chaos theory.
Because you never know, it might happen, the queen, gawd bless 'er, might have to go to some function and get bored and hungry with those little nibbles and decide to pop off to her local for some grub and looks at the menu and spies spaghetti!
Eating spaghetti in ermin doesn't work well.
So she has to attend the function, all covered in tomato and sauce feeling all embarressed so she has a few too many to hide her embaressment (Phillllllllleeeeeeeep) and the german prime minister - who is always well dressed - gets upset at her dress - all covered in sauce.  This makes him mad.
Angry.
So he calls her a dirty, sloven englishwoman and by now, the queens sloshed and throws a punch at the insult.
WWIII

Chaos Theory.
Thats why you never serve spaghetti in pubs.  Because you never know when the queen might call by.

my simple question, however non-sequitir or irreverent as it might be, but did he die peacefully?

Simply the chaos theory is that for every effect, there is a cause.
