And this is good, because?

kittinSol -> RE: Oil heading towards $125 a barrel (4/17/2008 11:23:58 AM)

It's good because it rattles your cage [:D] . Petrol was too cheap in America anyway: about time the country reconsiders its energy options. And stops using one car for one person all the time. Car pools, get your children to walk to school if it's not too far, etcaetera, etcaetera.

There is apparently a lot of love to be had in this thread.

I agree. It's about time that people stopped relying on outside sources to meet our needs-and thought more about economy and self reliance.

Too much selfish hedonism going on at the cost of our children's futures. This pinch is going to force a wake up call as people can literally no longer afford thier wasteful habits..

And have to begin to plan living within thier means-instead of just going down the happy road as stupid consumers.

I have to second Kitten’s motion.

Seems to me, everything is going according to plan. Pretty soon the working poor, will not even be able to afford to go to work; just as it should be. This is beneficial because those who are doing well will have more justified reasons to blame them for not doing better for their selves.

It should pull everyone else down as well, because it means more money toward gas, less toward the important services the ‘upper classes” provide.

It’s all good though, my job will be open. Oh wait, I forgot; those people will not want my job. The work is hard, the hours suck, and you only get paid enough to exist.

Oh well, we can all be poor together; except for the rich, of course.

My fiancee is getting to the point where she cannot afford to drive to work.  When she works 8 hour shifts, one quarter of her shift is dedicated to gas to go to work and return home; it doesn't leave much for groceries, rent, etc.

We've got to get this under control somehow....and as far as oil prices being "inflated"...Most other industrialized country have inflated gas prices, inflated by taxes, that is.  Shall we raise the gas tax to make it even more expensive to drive to work?

Sounds like a waste of energy to me. Let’s just consider it done and stay home.

Of course that won't last long. I shall remember to buy a tent with my last paycheck.

Oil prices are up all over the world, not just the USA. So if you're right, that means that George Bush's magic conspiracy button is even making oil expensive in places like China and India...

Now that's a lot of power. George Bush must be like a god in your mind.

I had to laugh when I read that the interviewee of the article lost 20% of the value of his hedge fund during the first quarter of 2008, betting that the price of oil would go down.

Sell your car and walk, it will make you healthier and the world a little healthier too.

RealityLicks -> RE: Oil heading towards $125 a barrel (4/18/2008 2:14:22 AM)

It's funny how things come full circle.  Most European cities were built for the horse and suffered congestion with the advent of cars.  Now car travel is becoming problematic, the compact city model is being mooted and long commutes are starting to look unsustainable.  Change hurts.

Sure thing.  I work 12 miles from home. Figuring an average of 3mph walking speed, that would take me 4 hours each way.  Let's not forget that not all of that route is pedestrian friendly (no sidewalks / crosswalks at corners / etc).  And in the climate here, by the time I GOT to work, I'd be hot and sweaty.  JUST the professional image I want to present.

Really, though, I'd take the bus - if there were any routes nearby. even if I drove (or walked hah) to the nearest route, it would still take over 3 hours to get to work, because I'd have to travel to the other side of town (on 3 buses) to catch yet another 3 buses to get back to where I need to be.  Oh, and then I'd be stuck at work after my shift ends at midnight, because the buses in that area quit running at 9pm.

Got grass in your yard ? get a horse.

Maybe only one horsepower, but better than nothing.

Odd though thinking about it, the present age of oil, how fragile it was, maybe it is that transport of ages past will be the transport of the future?

domahpet -> RE: Oil heading towards $125 a barrel (4/18/2008 7:16:20 AM)
