Some people prefer to do that so that they can, indirectly, address all who are dominant with capital letters, always, and those who are submissive without capital letters, always.

Some people like to be different. It became the custom (online) back when chat was just green text for submissives to capitalize You when speaking with a dominant, and using lower case i, or using their name with lower case as a means of identifying themselves as submissive. It progressed to dominants saying Me and My to indicate they were dominants. Thus, if I was to address everyone in a room, I might say "when Y/you are having troubles communicating...." meaning I'm talking to all dominants, and submissives. I never use it, personally. I think the majority of people on this site F/favor P/proper E/english O/over F/frilly O/onlineisms. I do occasionally say s/he for the sake of convenience though. Stephan

In the use of pronouns, many capitalize when the subject is Dominant and and keep it in lower-case when the subject is submissives. The slash-speak (like Y/your) is generally when not directed specifically towards one or the other. i don't generally use the capitalization unless in terms of my own Dominant and Her Dominant Husband, and seldom if ever use slash-speak.

Most folks here have provided a reasonable explanation of why it started. I would just like to add my vote to the proper English side of the discussion. In the same vein, dominant and submissive are adjectives, not nouns. So I would prefer to read "I am the dominant partner" over "I am a dominant."

:) don't learn to adopt that trait! Please! I find my eyes glaze over when people do slashy speak or refer to MASTER, HE (note the caps) as if they were God incarnate. I was "taught" the caps/small letters rule when I first came into the scene, and while I know there are some here who don't like it, I do find it useful. I am both sub and Domme, not so much a switch who flip flops from one to the other ... but more of a dual personality where both sides can operate almost simultaneously. So that can get a bit confusing because sometimes my 2 personas have slightly different points of view! And here as I respond to questions, I want to let people know whether I am answering as a Dominant or as a sub. So I tend to type Me, My etc when it is My Dominant side talking (Jay) and me, my when it is my submissive side talking (violet, collared to Master, shown as [A]). I used to use the slash speak more, but try to minimise it! I think it's more important to ask what the person you are corresponding with actually prefers, and just try to be tolerant on the boards! The one I find most difficulty with is the third person speak "girl does this" ... and bright lairy fonts which hurt My eyes! Oh ... and mis-spellings, describing yourself as "a Dominate" etc! It's fine if that's what's decided in personal mail contacts and you do what you can in maintaining a dynamic for those limited to mostly email relationships but purleeeeeeeease keep the slashes off public discussion boards - it's annoying. It's really annoying, don't do it. It's one of the most annoying and retarded things I've ever seen on this site. To me, it's almost as bad as chatspeak.

To honestly answer your question. There has been studies that show certain people just cannot handle being in this lifestyle and slowly become retarded.
