hsagnev -> the weekend started off good - until I paid my taxes (4/7/2008 10:09:41 PM)

Yeah, I'd definitely say that when I finished up with my taxes on Sunday and actually had to write a check for $16k to  be   mailed out first thing in the morning (today, Monday) that put me in one of the most foul moods I've ever been in for a long time.  Writing that check hurt and it wasn't the good kind of hurt.

I think this is the part of the episode where he mentions that he makes $127,000 a year.

Just wait until the leftists take over the country.... more social services, universal healthcare, bailing out people who made stupid decisions with their mortgage. We will all be paying a boatload in taxes in a few years.

ah.... i have an BSEE and MSEE and live in one of the most expensive places in the USA....so,.... yeah.... I make a lot of money....  (and so do many who live where I live - otherwise we wouldn't be able to live here)....  anyway.... I've been working as a consultant for the last year and, well, haven't been paying my taxes (until now).  The point was this: it put me in one of the most foul moods in a long time.

I know. What an outrage.

We all know the purpose of government is to provide corporate welfare, protectionism for Wall Street, endless funds for the military industrial complex, financial backing for wars serving private goals and hand-outs to international banks via the whole monetary system.

I'd rather the former than the latter.

Yup, and $34.6B in foreign aid a few months ago while many of the victims of Katrina are going wanting, bailing out big banks who "knowingly" make bad loans to third world countries then seek a bailout from uncle sam then,....make *more* loans to third world countries that they know won't be paid back until the "next" big bailout.
Oh, and building hospitals in foreign countries while 47 m working class Americans go without health care because they can't afford it.

hsagnev -> RE: the weekend started off good - until I paid my taxes (4/7/2008 11:23:46 PM)

Health care seems to be a thing of the past - I pay for my own health care now.

SugarMyChurro -> RE: the weekend started off good - until I paid my taxes (4/7/2008 11:31:50 PM)

That's a very un-american viewpoint you have there, popeye1250. They're going to put you in Room 101.

Um...for "counseling."

DesFIP -> RE: the weekend started off good - until I paid my taxes (4/8/2008 5:01:51 AM)

One, you can deduct out of pocket health care expenses including toothpaste and bandaids if they are above 5% of your total income.
Two, there's a reason people pay quarterly estimated taxes. Next year do so.
Three, you might wish to consult a good accountant, they'll know the code better than Turbo Tax or the other program and might be able to significantly reduce your bill. Not to mention, that should you get audited, you always want an accountant on your side.

How does someone who thinks "good" is an adverb, get to earn at that rate?

Have you ever noticed that in the monologue of Star Trek they say, "to boldly go" when it should be written as, "to go boldly?"   I don't know.  Maybe no one cares anymore.

hsagnev -> RE: the weekend started off good - until I paid my taxes (4/8/2008 7:40:50 AM)

That reminds me of something. When I was an undergrad at Cal Poly SLO I sat on the engineering council and during those years a little debate on the need for engineering students to take more general education had been bantered about occasionally. Although American universities already provide a lot of general education to all undergrads it was, perhaps, felt by liberal arts majors that engineers needed to take more of these classes.

I can remember on one particular day when some of the engineering members pointed out that there are many liberal arts majors that fail to understand the most basic concepts of the natural sciences and that they should be required to take more physics and calculus courses to supplant their education if the engineering students are add to their curriculum. Some of the engineering members claimed that it was more important that additional science classes be added to the liberal arts majors.

Well, my thoughts are this.  Those that earn an education and go on to post graduate work tend to specialize.

I know what you mean, the transmission in my Porche Carrera just went out and it is going to cost me 16 grand for another one. Really made me upset. Now I have to drive my SL Mercedes until it is out of the shop. I am really pissed.

Aileen1968 -> RE: the weekend started off good - until I paid my taxes (4/8/2008 7:58:43 AM)

Yay...mailed mine off to the accountant this morning.  [sm=banana.gif]  I'll find out in a few days how much I get back.  I haven't had to pay in years.

I don't think I'm going to be able to dig deep enough to offer any sympathy to the OP

LaTigresse -> RE: the weekend started off good - until I paid my taxes (4/8/2008 8:19:07 AM)

Hey, they want 12K from me and I don't come anywhere NEAR to making 6 figures. So no, I don't feel bad for the OP at all.

Me and the IRS, working out a payment plan.......one penny at a time.

KatyLied -> RE: the weekend started off good - until I paid my taxes (4/8/2008 8:24:41 AM)

I'd say better a payment plan than a garnishment.  The IRS can take almost anything they want.  It's best to play nice with them.

I'm getting a little refund this year, the smallest I've had in eons, because my dependents have left home and I can no longer claim them.  I loved the days of $2,000 + refunds.  I miss them already.  That is one of the only advantages to being poor, the tax refund check.

LaTigresse -> RE: the weekend started off good - until I paid my taxes (4/8/2008 8:27:01 AM)

Yeah, I would have gotten a refund this year......... only $795.00 and most of it would have gone to pay state taxes........but it would have been nice to actually SEE it.
