Health care seems to be a thing of the past - I pay for my own health care now.

well, kudos and back pats for you.  Not everyone can afford their own health care, so for a lot of people, it is not a thing of the past.

Part of the problem with being a 'sole proprietor' working as a contractor is that Medicare and Social Security 'contributions,' which an employer pays 50% of, you have to pay all by yourself. It's called Self-Employment Taxes. So the tax burden of a self-employed person is greater than that of someone who works for someone else.

There are rules now to prevent companies from telling their employees that they are 'independent contractors' just so they (the companies) don't have to pay the SS and Medicare.

But sixteen thousand dollars? I didn't earn much more than that in 2007 (although it was all non-taxable).

pip, not looking forward to paying taxes again when I land a job

Yeah, I'd definitely say that when I finished up with my taxes on Sunday and actually had to write a check for $16k to  be   mailed out first thing in the morning (today, Monday) that put me in one of the most foul moods I've ever been in for a long time.  Writing that check hurt and it wasn't the good kind of hurt.

Am pleased You are in superior mood to Sunday/Monday!! At least folks are talking with You now Sir.

if you set the deductable really high then it isn't expensive at all.   I pay $170 per month (the deductable is $2700).
