I found the following links invaluable when I was first going to events. Hopefully they'll help you, as well. Keep in mind that people at munches and play parties are just people like me or you. We were all new once. When I started going to different events I was welcomed with open arms and helped kindly along my path. You'll meet some truly fantastic people once to you take the chance and just go.

Edited to add: Join some of your area group's webgroups and hang out on the message boards there before you go to a munch. That way you get a feel for things. Once you're more comfortable, tell them exactly what you've told us. They can then tell you their specific protocols for munches and play parties. Another added benefit is that you will probably get a couple of people who offer to meet you for coffee or something before the munch so that you know someone at the munch.

keep looking my dear. We had an active and friendly group in of all places, Topeka, KS. There is one near you. No one will bite you (unless you ask nicely of course). Don't hesitate to talk to someone your gender/age. You'll be fine. Have fun.

My first munch many years ago, was held in the basement meeting room of a gay bar. I was as nervous as a long tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs. Someone started talking to me, Before I knew it, the evening was over and I had great fun. No-one was hitting on each other as far as I could tell (except for the florintine flogging demonstration).
