Putin wants Russia and the United States to build a tunnel under the Bering Strait which would link Siberia to Alaska and connect rail lines from Asia and Europe to the Americas.

Officials on both sides view the potential project (which would cost an estimated $60 billion dollars) as a way to cool tensions between the two countries. It would also open a new route of trade.

Putin plans to discuss the project with President Bush next week.

There have been talks for years and scads of feasibility studies done regarding bridging the Bering Strait as well.  Bridge or tunnel, I think it would be a great thing.

Both countries wanted to do this as far back as the early 1900s. The idea was trashed when the Soviets took over and everyone got distracted with the world wars. Now with the fall of communism and the rise of free trade, there are more and more people trying to bring the idea back to life.

Now tell the truth, stef.

Has there ever been a tunnel-related proposal you weren't just dripping to get going with?

Amen Stef.  I mentioned this about a year ago when pasting one of Putin's speechs denouning the  ''one master'' , ''one soverign'' uni-polar idealism of the neocons.

Anyways....we need to build a good, solid friendship with the Russians, not antagonize them by placing ballistic missles on their backdoor through former eastern bloc sattelites.

I see the tunnel as a ''Keynesian'' ''new deal'' exercise that could put a lot of people to work and help propel us out of a sustained economic doldrum.

Wonder if that'd cut down on the bomber flights?

They could just run some APCs down the tunnel instead

Democrat or Republican, they are far more likely to outsource it to the Chinese.

Imagine The Enviromental Impact Study and permitting process on that project.  It would be great, but I dont see it happening anytime soon.

I am personally against , the arctic tundra regions is an  extremely fragile environment simply walking over the tundra will cause damage that will take 10 years for the areas where your feet made contact to recover.   the warmer temperature in the last decade is already causing serious soil erosion problem in the area where the permafrost has melt  the arctic areas contain 1/3 rd of the world carbon soils  damage to plant and soil and warmth  causes a release of carbon dioxide,  the impact of putting pipelines in was a major environmental concern back in the 70's  and a huge amount of planning with input from scientists from all over the world  was included to try and minimize amount of  the damage in building the pipeline and regardless  serious environmental did occur as a result ,

Putting in an underground tunnel would severely impact  the trundras environment  and introduce a lot more traffic as well and would result in severe environmental  damage  and speed up the erosion that is already occuring at an alarmingly rapid rate already.  The scientists are already worried and concerned about how the soil is going to react  as large tracts  of permafrostareas continues to melt

Is having a tunnel really worth the irreparable damage that it will cause to such a sensitive enviroment  that so much effort has went into trying to protect and preserve?   If there was no other means inorder to travel from the US and Russia maybe  but that is not the case,  why destroy one of the last greatest remaining wilderness in the world?

I don't see it anytime soon.  It's something that has been talked about for over a century, just like a highway stretching from Alaska to the tip of South America.  Hell, the proposed highway to the southern end of South America was started and never finished.  You can drive to Panama if you don't mind terrible roads and the threat of being kidnapped or killed on your way down.  Grand proposals like this sound great, but they are rarely feasible.

World Peace, the advancement of human kind, real jobs, real economic boosts for economies on both sides, scientific advancement, social advancement and the over all betterment of man kind pretty much outweighs, your arguments except....

The Arctic, especially in the Bearing Sea regions is not the least bit "fragile" and the greatest reaming wilderness is the Oceanic Abyss.

Yes.  Absolutely.  If, in fact, tundra was going to be affected by a tunnel under the ocean.  And let's go get our own oil out of ANWR as well.  The caribou will just have to deal.

Reality check, Maya.  How wide is a railroad track?  Even if the lines of transport to the tunnel entrances were routed across your precious permafrost, those same unstable ground conditions would almost certainly require an elevated railbed anyway.

Look at the map. The project is absurd. Much more efficient way for Putin to send spies is using air travel.

Putin is looking for ways to get eastern Russia out of depression. The western part of the country and around Moscow are doing quite well trading with the Europeans. But the eastern and Siberian areas are in a deep depression. Even basic emergency services dont exist in some towns because the cities cant afford them. Populations have also been declining since the fall of communism. Most factories closed down long ago. Putin knows that Russia needs to find some way to generate wealth in that area again if they ever want to become a strong power economically. Siberia is dragging the entire economy down and it shouldnt be considering the vast amount of untapped resources. A trade route would surely bring an economic boom to eastern Russia and to Alaska.
Russia would also like to charge nations in Asia, including China, money to use the route. So it opens up another source of income to Moscow.

I think it will be done eventually....it is a matter of when the politics and economics of the two countries align correctly. There is a lot of people and companies on both sides that would make a lot of money....that's why the idea isnt going to go away.

And diplomatically...projects like these tend to bring nations closer. So there is a lot of advantages. But cost and environemental impact are going to be obstacles. Environmentalists will fight the project tooth and nail.

Possible explanations for this move...

1. They want an easier way to invade
2. They want to hide their horizontal mining for oil under Alaska with a fictitious transport link project
3. They want to sell you their natural gas so you become dependant on them and they can blackmail you on the political stage.
4. They want a transport link

Only time will tell...
