sirsholly -> Pregnancy help... (3/26/2008 8:12:08 AM)

We are expecting and are 6 weeks along. Gotta tell you i am scared to death here. I had a very bad pregnancy with our little one. I was pre-eclamptic from the 5th month and had an emergency c-section when i turned to full eclampsia. But, i have an awesome group of doctors who will do everything they can to get us all through this.

Here is my question: I had severe itching with my first pregnancy. Actually, itching does not do it justice. I felt like i was getting stabbed with a thousand needles, everywhere, all the time. I tried everything i could think of to stop it, humid air, changing all chemicals (laundry deterg, bath soap..etc). The doctors tried rx anti itch creams, as well as the strongest antihistamine i could safely take. Nothing helped. It nearly drove me to the brink of insanity. I was told the itching is not common with pre-eclampsia but it does occur and no one knows why.

I was wondering if anyone else had this issue and if so, are able to offer any advice?

Edited to add....Damn...i wanted to post this under the Health forum.

benadryl lotion, calamine lotion, cool baths, moisturize....

start now with cool baths and moisturize.

It's call PUPPS, and delivery of the babies is the only cure.  Cut out all the salt you can, and apply icy cold wash cloths (or take a cold shower) when the itching is bad.  If you're not already a member of Babycenter.com, I would highly recommend it.  Their message boards are extensive and you can get really good info.

Cali,
Great advice from both you and Ron.
Going to look up PUPPS now. It helps to know it actually has a name!

Did you have a rash with the itching?  I ask because I had some bizarre pregnancy rash the last two weeks of my pregnancy with my first child.  I went to a dermatologist and he said the same thing "only delivery will ease this condition."  He gave me cream and told me to take anti-histamines, he assured me it was safe to do so as I was close to delivery.  I later found out my grandmother had the same rash when she was pregnant with my dad.  I did not have the rash with my second child (although I was induced at the time I probably would've been symptomatic, long story there).

cant offer advice (my babies are furry)... but just wanted to give you a hug :)

Katy, thanks for responding. There was no rash, dry skin, etc. And it did stop right after the c-section. Hopefully it won't happen this time.

Your discription of the itch is often what is said with restless leg syndrome.  I don't think that is your problem, I only bring it up because of the discription you used.  When I get that pins and needles or stabbing and prickling pain, I use a hand held massager to try to stop it.  That and hot or cold something or other, mostly hot showers.  I am not talking from a dx standpoint, but one of dealing with symptoms.  Maybe you could check with your doctors and ask if massage might help.

Each pregnancy can be different.  I had four and all were different.  Let's just hope you won't have the same difficulties this time as you did the first time!  Try not to worry.  Stress does a lot of weird stuff.  Just try to push it to the back of your mind and get through the day thinking of that wonderful lil bundle of joy you get in the end.  Enjoy!

thank you Lockit...good advice

CalifChick -> RE: Pregnancy help... (3/26/2008 11:10:25 AM)

Heat is generally not indicated for this condition.  It almost universally makes it worse, as does massage or other physical manipulations.  I said it was called PUPPS, but if you're googling, it's also called PUPPP (Pruritic Urticarial Papules and Plaques of Pregnancy).  Here is some info. While that site talks about a rash, the itching is not always accompanied by rash.

Cali...thank you so much!! The one thing that put this massive grin on my face is the article said it generally occurs with the first pregnancy only!!

Thanks CalifChick,

I was afraid to say anything, but I know the massage helps me big time.  That's why I said she should check with her doctors because I have never heard of PUPPP.  But I will be googling that!  Sounds awful to go through and I am interested in what might cause the symptoms and wonder about any neuro involvement.  Thank you for the information and the correction where my advice might have been harmful!

CalifChick -> RE: Pregnancy help... (3/26/2008 11:20:01 AM)

Unfortunately, they still don't know what causes it.  And the only cure is delivery. The rest is just biding your time and trying to get by.

Wow!  I just googled and am more confused than before! lol  On one hand they say that it comes with toxemia and then later mention things that seem to conflict or get confusing.  Toxemia is typically in first pregnancies.  But the research confuses me.  But one thing that impresses me is that French researchers are working on this.  They are my hero's! lol  I know they are all different professionals, but they seem to be getting into things that few are and they are getting results.  I hope they can find something here because this sounds harsh to deal with, confusing and any stress during that time for sure isn't good.  Now more than before I wonder about the neuro connection and nerve fiber endings.

My best to you holly!

I had the itching...but not in my first pregnancy, only my second!  Actually, the itching started before I even knew I was pregnant- and was so intense that I wanted to scratch my skin off.  While the pregnancy was not an easy one and I had some high risk issues- everything turned out great in the end.  Had a healthy baby- and the itching disappeared, as promised.  While I tried most of the things recommended- nothing much, short of delivery, gave any lasting relief.

Hang in there, though...*huggs* just remember, if it happens again, you made it through it the first time- and it's just temporary.   And, each pregnancy is different- so, try not to worry too much until there is a reason to.  Hopefully, this time will be smooth sailing.

Regarding the Eclampsia, I found an interesting site when I was pregnant.  While I try not to offer people medical advice, I will say that for ~me~, it was beneficial:

Oh, wow did you read where it usually happens with a male fetus?  They think it may be some sort of maternal reaction to male DNA, how bizarre.  I had the rash and itching and it was awful.  The funniest thing about it was that the dermatologist predicted that I would have the baby by Saturday (I saw him on a Tuesday), I thought he was crazy (yeah, a dermatologist doing the ob's prediction work) and I laughed.  I had the baby on Thursday morning.  All he did was feel my stomach and told me that there was no way I'd last until the weekend.

Lockit -> RE: Pregnancy help... (3/26/2008 11:56:04 AM)

The information is saying that the DNA testing and such is proving that this most often happens with male bundles.  Toxemia is most often in first pregnancies, but can happen with any pregnancy.  I wonder if one can have this problem without the toxemia...

I too had his contdition the last month of my twin (males) pregnancy.. I thought i was going to go out of my mind.  Unfortunely it is true that the only resolve was delivery.  I was covered head to toe with a horrendous rash and itching that comapred with no other.  I did also have it briefly with my first pregnancy (also male)  but it did dissapate on it's own.

*hugs*  I hope it gets better for you!!

KatyLied -> RE: Pregnancy help... (3/26/2008 12:28:23 PM)

Yes, I had the rash and did not have toxemia.
