I've been thinking about my planned trip to Sweden and Ireland this year but the dollar to euro thing is just getting out of hand.
And I'm not alone, I know three other parties who are thinking about cancelling out too!
I'm just not going to pay 50% more for everything.
So, I was looking around the internet and came upon Buenos Aires, Argentina.
"The Paris of South America" according to the tour guides.
And a place I've always wanted to go to anyway.
Of course their weather and seasons are opposite to ours.
July is winter there.
But, the prices for hotels, meals, taxis, and just about everything else there are a bargain compared to Europe!
Long flight though and expensive!
Nine and a half hours from Miami/Atlanta and about $1,500 as opposed to R/T $680 Boston to Dublin, 6 hours.
Has anyone in here been to Buenos Aires?

Most large cities in the world can be potentially dangerous places for the ill-informed.

Buenos Aires is a very modern city possessed of a cosmopolitan citizenry, beautiful natural environs, great cityscapes, world class entertainment, and just about the best cuisine in the world. To most U.S. travelers it would seem like Europe in miniature, but also better and cheaper.

Before Americans mixed African rhythms and came up with jazz, Argentines had already arrived at the tango. The birth place of this famous dance and music scene was La Boca, the mouth of the Rio de la Plata. Tango was the dance of sailors and hookers.

I'm definitely going to be following this thread! I thought this would be the year I'd do my dream trip to Tuscany, but not with the weak dollar! I'm thinking of just an early wintertime/birthday trip to Aruba instead.

Churro! Hey, I was a Sailor, maybe I can find some hookers down there to "dance" with me!
I've been reading up on Buenos AIRES and it sounds great!
A lot of stuff on Youtube about it too.
And the women there.....!
Yeah, that Tango dance is on youtube too, *very sexy dance that!*
They have like,..."Tango Schools" there that you can go to and watch them train.
It looks like they're in very good shape to do that dance!
Also they have Tango dancers on the street corners who put out a hat and make their living dancing for the tourists and passersby!
Checkout Youtube, they're incredably good dancers!
And yes, it's a very cosmopolitan, international city.
They have a street there that's supposed to be the longest in the world at 200 blocks! And another is the widest at 16 lanes or something like that.
I was watching the Travel Channel with Samantha Brown last year when she did her Latin American tour and a whole show was about Buenos Aires and she said it's "huge".
I was just watching some take offs and landings at Ezeize airport on Youtube and you can tell that it's an enourmous city area -wise.
I've been watching Youtube about B.A. for the last two hours, very interesting stuff!

It's all about the empanadas. Also try the pizza fugasa with either just cheese and onion, or maybe with cheese and corn. The Italian food will be the best you've ever had. The beef will be the best you've ever had - parillada is a must. If you get accommodations with a cooking space look for open market produce and butchers with whole sides of beef from whom you can order exactly what you want directly off the animal. Try the crepes with dulce de leche.Traditionally, hot chocolate is served in two containers - one of steamed milk and the other containing melted chocolate.

Espresso should exist on every street and often as bars with no seats and no tables, they take it standing. One or two shots and you go!

Everyone smokes like chimneys, but that shouldn't bother you at all.

Churro, sounds like you've been there! Yeah, there's quite a bit of Italian influence in B.A.

I've been watching those Tango dances on youtube for two hours now! VERY nice! And what skill and coordination to be able to do that stuff!
And practice! Holy cow!

My family used to keep a house in the Belgrano district of Buenos Aires. It was a three story, single family dwelling with a cottage in the back. Also a swimming pool.

My salad days...

My whole family is from there. I know all about it. But it has been years since I have been back.

My Argentine friends say it is much more dangerous than New York. There are very few districts which they say are safe to walk through. Now if you confine yourself to the tourist areas, you shouldn't have too much trouble. But just wandering is not recommended.

I second that, whatever else you do, do not try to drive there!
Churro, what is the public transport system like?
Is there a rail or subway system, or is it only buses and cabs?
Do you need to tip the cab drivers?

Yes. Buenos Aires has truly outstanding cuisine. But Rio De Janero was a hell of a lot more fun. Then again, I visited both over 20 years ago. Things may have changed since then.

Churro, cool! Did you grow up there?
I've been reading up on it and it looks like a great place to go to.
All kinds of things to do and places to see. And the women!
So, it looks like I'll be going at some point.
Good article about the "ex-pats" too.
I can't find anything that says it's particularly dangerous.
To the contrary most articles say that it's fairly safe just to watch out for pickpockets and scam artists.
You just have to watch your back like in any big city I guess.

Why wouldn't you go to Europe/ You think it's expensive now, wait till the exchange rate is 2 to 1.
