My Sama and I were having a discussion about knives, etc, which we never have tried before. I thought that knifeplay was when you don't actually cut the bottom, but rather get it into their heads that they are being cut (more psychologically, like showing them the knife, cutting through something with it to prove its sharpness, then blindfolding them and running the dull edge over them). More of a fear play thing than pain play. Sama says that it can involve actually cutting the bottom, though. I thought that ran in a different line of play, but I'm not sure, so I thought I would ask here. Thank you in advance for your answers!

Respectfully,
Shawna

For the most part they are considered separate forms of play, though obviously can be done together.  As always, if you're unsure, ask.

For me, knife play and cutting are two different subjects that can be used together.  You can do one without the other, either of them.
If you are unsure how your partner views it, communicate and question first to make sure.

As stated by previous posters they are generally seen as 2 different things. BUT they can be utilised together. Generally speaking I use Knifeplay as a warm up. a sensous use of the knife to awaken the bodies sensitivity. At most in knifeplay I will use the tip of the knife to scratch lightly only penentrating to the 3rd dura layer of skin. This leaves a mark for about 1/2 an hour. cutting play tends to be more intense, sharper. No pun intended. greater potential for injury. The person cutting needs to be trusted deeply for this to be more enjoyable. They also need to : know basic first aid, intimately know there knife, have all necessary safety equipment.( alcohol/hydrogen peroxide, paper towels rubber gloves etc....) then proceed with GREAT care and communication with the cuttee proceed as trust is established. This just a basic overview of SOME of the ways to do these things. Please attend a safety class/demo in your area for more detailed play techniques and safety protocols.

Yeah i see them as seperate, Ceno has lots of knives but none are sharp enough to cut, he just likes how they put the heeby jebbies into people if he is going to cut he uses a razor because they are sterile etc etc

For me, knife play and cutting are synonymous but they dont have to be. As a sub, knife play meant being cut with a craft knife, having 'slut' or 'slavebitch' carved on me.

However, I also switch and as a Domme, I tend to use knives only for sensation play rather than using them to cut.

I don't really have terminology for it.  He plays with me with his knife.  Sometimes he scraps words into me, on some rare occasions he cuts, and sometimes he doesn't.  Often times he uses it erotically on me, sometimes as a fear tactic.

I suppose to me, that's all "knife play."

Others do "cutting", which I believe is more along the lines of a scalpel and cutting designs into a person.

This is an excellent example of asking "What do you mean by that?"  The scene has yet to produce a Webster so definitions often vary widely among individuals.  This could well be a case study of "I thought I knew what he/she meant!"

While it too is individual, you might want to read http://www.lovingdominant.org/glossary.html

Sometimes when he uses a knife he will cut (actually draw blood), sometimes he will just mark me (scratch but not draw blood), sometimes he will use it to scrape or poke.  Sometimes it is painful, other times it is sensual and erotic.  Well, even when it is painful it is erotic  *eg*

Asking the question Dr. Warren mentioned would be useful.

Yeah for us it has always been vastly differnt from cutting......but we did encounter an issue with this confusion while playing with another couple...it wasn't talked out ahead of time and how they knife play and how we always have were different...But it did teach me a couple valuable things, communication with something like that is very important and i am allowed to safeword if it is something i am really against (which i was unaware of ,being a new situation playing with others)

Having never come across a submissive with bits chopped off or indeed a submissive who has come sliced, but having met submissives without scars or missing body parts who claimed to be into knife play, I have sort of assumed that knife play is playing with knives but doesn't necessarily include cutting, stabbing, slicing or chopping of the submissive.

It might even be something innocuous like spreading butter or raspberry jam on a submissive, as this is something else you can do with a knife.

Thank you so much everyone for your help in clarifying this. After reading about how some of you use knifeplay, I am both intrigued by it and (a little) afraid of trying it out. I don't know if this is something we will do in the future, but this thread has helped a lot! Thank you so much again! ^_^

Respectfully,
Shawna

Acttually, I like to use a chilled blade to scrape off wax after wax play.

But like many of the other posters, I concider knifeplay and cutting seperate.  However, putting a condom on the handle of my Ka-Bar and inserting it after she's gotten 'warmed up' I would still concider knifeplay.

This would definatly be one of those good times to clarify, since it can have diffrent meanings. Knife play for me usually involves blood, usually being the key word. :)  I've managed to keep my clothes intact so far, but I'm generally  o'natuale by the time we start to play.

Kinife play added to a scene is a reward for me.You can do all sorts of laviscious things with knives and never  break skin, it's amazing  the intresting places handles can go!

Well, depends if your master is using the butcher knives... i wonder how many in here are butchers by trade and would love to indulge the knife play fetish???

When his knives come out and they always come out LOL it means I am going to bleed. So for us knife play means that cutting will occur. However if he is going to do a cutting scene he will use a scalpel and do a detail oriented design.

I have only recently come into contact with knife play but it is quickly becoming one of my favorite things lol. So far it has not included cutting though it has broken the skin on a few occasssions, having my clothes cut off me was an awesome experience and I look forward to exploring this futher. Even though my understanding is that knife play and cutting are two different areas, I am with the other posters here in that asking questions avoids misunderstandings.

I consider them two different things. Simply put, knifeplay requires knives; cutting can use other sharp objects.

But beyond that there is a greater degree of knowledge about the body and risks involved in cutting than in knifeplay though I have cautioned those I've mentored in it (as I was cautioned by my mentor) that you never under estimate the risk with a knife even if all you are doing is touching it to skin or making lines.
