Yes, but that's different. He was in the National Assembly of the Revolutionary Government in 1790, and a supporter of Jean-Paul Marat when the Reign of Terror began. It was Napoleon who had him arrested in 1801.

I was simply quoting what it said here in the book, but luckily the post is about interpretation rather than the specifics of his life, which seem rather vague at best anyways

Oh i dont know the sewing syphilis into her would be a bit gross regardless of their relationship and the bit with the pliars did make me gasp at first. but i do agree with you that Dolmance does seem to be logical if a bit unsavory, the same for Saint Ange I think.

i'm just now reading Justine, after following the link Leatherist posted about a week ago....

There is so much going on in the story, from the overt sexuality to the political tone, religious tone etc. Interesting reading for sure.

One thing i have noted, and may be due to my own religious upbringing, is the absolute strength (thus far anyway) in Justine/Therese's virtue.....No matter what life has thrown her way in all of her misfortune's and mishaps, she remains so strong in her convictions of her Virtue and religious beliefs....very strong girl....almost saintly, dare i say.

Also, interesting to me is the complete lack of virtue by all of the villians and the ways that they present things to her to try to persuade her...like temptation, or the little devil on your shoulder....or misery loves company and all of that....but also, in the complete logic most of their arguments come from, they truly believe what they are saying to her, or are justifying their own criminal behavior.

So anyway....back to reading.

Yeah in the introduction he says that Virtue can only be appriciated by comparing it with total evil which is why there is no humanity in the characters, however the poltical message becomes far more potenet in Juliette.

i also wanted to mention, the obvious overtones where in she is tormented at each and every turn, where everyone seems to be a predator.....just shows De Sade's disdain for religion and virtue....maybe i am reading into him, not knowing much of him other than the movie "Quills" and that sadism was named for him....just seems that he makes it clear that he abhors virtue, innocence and all of that........with everyone being a predator agaisnt this solitary virtuous creature.............Like he is really pointing fingers at the church and all of its teachings......

not sure if i'm on with that assumption or not.

If you read Sodom and what they do to priests, holy water, crusifixs etc, yeah he hates religion, he sees it as a duping tool, thats I think why he uses the membors of the congregation as some of the worst perpetrators, its suggesting the hypocrisy but also that only the ignorant believe in it when even the priests and monks dont

It's been a long time since I read anything by de Sade. I never found his work terribly erotic, but some of it was definitely thought-provoking. I have a lot of sympathy for his contempt for religion, and his insistence that there are no legitimate sources of absolute, objective morality. As I recall, however, he seemed to think that everyone ought to respond to this situation by indulging their worst impulses, however cruel or even murderous. I prefer to adhere as much as possible to my own subjective morality, which at least gives me a framework for making rational decisions.
