Reading that quote and being asked who said it, I'd be hard pressed to have the Speaker's name in the list of the first 100 names I would consider. However, the quote is taken from her during her visit to the home of exiled Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Llama, in Dharamsala, India.

The meeting was scheduled long before the current problems arose; however it would have been easy for her, under the circumstances, to cancel. It is good to be able to point out something positive coming out of Congress. Good for her and the other 10 members who accompanied her.

This should be getting more press. The upcoming Olympics in China have an eerie parallel to those held in 1936 Berlin. There are a lot of blemishes being coated over with whitewash for the world press. Speaker Pelosi is right in pointing out the biggest one - Tibet.

Nancy Pelosi has been a very active critic of China for more than 10 years. She was one of the leading voices against giving China most favored nation status back in the mid 90's.

She is rocking the boat.

If China pulls out of T-bills-  we sink.

The house of cards collapses.

1.  we arent one to command as we are in Iraq.
2.  the Chinese own our debt
3. we are not serious about cleaning our house.

so- would it mean a boycott?    well that is sillyy- as the next one the boycott will be returned.

we are inpotent.

i not saying it is "right"- im describing how i view it

I disagree, we're paying her to look out for the interests of the U.S. not foreign countries.
How's she doing on getting that Mexican border secured and getting the people in this country illegally deported?

You forgot to mention something about Ted Kennedy.

It is rather important for our politicians to have a pretty good grip on what is transpiring in this world that surrounds us. If we have a good understanding maybe we could avoid some of the mistakes we have made in the past.

What are you going to do with yourself when this is no longer the topic du jour? Just follow people like Lou Dobbs to their next topic designed to frighten an aging white America?

popeye, I strongly disagree with you.  I think encouraging China to allow free speech and dissent for its people, is very important to our national security, in the short, medium and long terms.  Its not an either/or type thing

I don't think it is necessarily only the rich...In fact I would think more of the lower to middle class are the ones that are getting riled up over the horrible influx of illegals.

Sanity, the fact is that this will pass with probably little getting done...Should we secure our borders...Yep. Should we be more concerned about the "illegal" employers than the workers....Damn straight! If I was a poor Mexican and had access to American employment I would be over that fence in a heartbeat. How can you blame them?

This is going to be the gay marriage topic of '08. You get a group of white people together who can't understand how and why the world has changed and you remind them about how good things were in the past and all of the horrors and evils that they face today....You don't give a damn about actually solving any problems your job is to say you know where the problem lies and to point out to them who is to blame for all of the ills they are so afraid of. Four years ago it was homos....This time around it is Mexicans. Where is the amendment to ban gay marriages?

It's kind of sad how people will buy into this kind of shit. None of these fuckers, Lou Dobbs etc., are interested in solving any problems there only concern is finding the topic du jour to scare the pants off of whitey...as long as their name gets mentioned that is all they are about. If we had bigger brains and actually used them maybe we wouldn't be so easily duped.

Quite the lucky break for her then that President Bush is staying clear of the topic.  She'd have to chuck all those years of activism right out the window and buy some tickets to the Olympics herself.

Not really.. if we collapse, so does the Chinese. The growth of their economy depends on access to our markets.

As for debt...the Chinese only own 17% of our foreign debt. Japan holds the majority of the debt.

There's a power ebb and flow at work here, in all these things. Without opposition gay marriage would have been the norm by now, it's not but  gays have made fantastic strides in the past twenty to thirty years. In Conservative Idaho my own kid plays daily with a child from just  down the road who was adopted by a lesbian couple, and no one says a thing these days. Neither the far left nor the far right get all they want, as usual, but things do change.

There has also been some movement on the southern front, with the illegals. There have been some high profile raids by the feds, John McCain has said that he's heard voter anger in that regard, and efforts at the state and local level in many places seem to be making a big difference too.

You made some pretty good points, I'm surprised to find myself in so much agreement with you. You made me stop and think a little bit. But I disagree in that I don't think all of the pundits and talking heads are all the same,  that is I don't think they all have a "scare whitey" agenda at all. Some may, but I think they're a diverse crowd with differing motives. But in this you're right, a key to deciphering them is understanding their motives. Some just want ratings, and will go on and on and on about the missing blonde babe who went partying on Aruba. A person can see right through most of them, with a critical eye and some practice.

I think our brains are big enough, some of us. Using our brains takes a lot of time though. And who's got a lot of time? Just sitting down to pound out a decent reply here can be difficult if a person has a life.

And what's with all this "whitey" shit. This seems new. Has the news got us all divided now, suddenly seeing everything in colors? Is this the change that Obama keeps talking about?

I am glad that Speaker Pelosi and at least a few of our other elected officials are supporting Tibet and speaking out against the Chinese government.

Spot on, Popeye.

Who's the judge and jury in matters of freedom and civil liberties? I don't recall the United States being appointed by the world to this position - you'll find it's a self-proclaimed status.

'Pointing the finger with the situation in Iraq and Nicaragua and Venezuala etc...........you couldn't make it up.

Edited to add: it's amusing to watch people having their strings pulled without realising...."look at us, aren't we great, we speak out on Chinese atrocities.....we couldn't possibly have anything more than benevolent motives in Iraq".........the result: less soul searching, more war, more death, some Americans delude themselves that they're humanists, the US government and associates clean up.

What happens around the world affects the US. We are tied into the world in such a huge way, that we do need to do what we can, diplomatically, to help ease tensions and work for peace. [Fuck the military industrial complex, who love war and strife because it's great for a booming market.] As pointed out previously, it is in the interest of the National Security of the United States that this current conflict in China ends.

Clean our house, sure, we do need to, but we also need to clean up the street we littered all these past decades.
Isolationism is impossible in the industrial countries of the world.
Illegal immigration is not a problem. Gangs like M13 are.
I don't have a problem with Domiguy using the term "whitey" to be honest. It's a word, you can look at it and become enraged, or just read it as part of what he's saying. He's making a good point and I pretty well agree with him here.

Fear mongering is a huge problem in the US. We have a national "Def Con" just like the military does, except the military usually sits at 5 (lowest) while we are sitting at what(?) level 3 and have been for how many years? That's a fear tactic. It does not make us safer. Gods, how many of you have actually read the book 1984? How many of you realize how much Bush has done to make the US into that place? "Two minutes of fear" we get that from our news media and then some daily. We have the FBI gathering information on anyone they please; court papers recently out on this one. People being detained without due process. Sure, it's the other guy so what do you care. Well, what about when it is you?

Ms. Speaker of the House, KUDOS!

....with much of  any "suspect" word, words which could be distatsefull, it depends on the context of the use.

Lou Dobbs like so many are selling circus seats.  The razzle dazzle of being ouraged, well yeah- enough to sit thhru the commercial.

Birth rates among whites has lowered.   I have toned down to nuetral on the illegal immigration topic.    There is a faction of it- that does not want to blend in,  you know- learn English and not be "in your face"- that is a turn off to me -of any crowd.

The gay issue- I regret that it comes up as a wedge issue.  I am not quick to conclude great progress has been made in 20-30 years.  I am tho- discusted that it has tainted the masses to distract,  big time, to distract!  I hate that.
In the end it is not a  bread and butter issue. And frankly bread and butter is what it is about.

As to MFN status. We should revoke that.   The US is now like a whiney bitch with no teeth.

The west tends to discount the east. China offers alot- in medicine and culture....but in the west we are smug, and pretty much think it is our way or the highway.

Note that on the UN, china stays out of others affairs.   Albiet an old country/civilization.  China lets the US, be like a todller.  We cry and throw a tanroom, using our energy up.  Once we exhaust, and lay down for a nap, it then will turn out the lights or what have you.  Certainly there is power they have- by going with the gravity, not against it like we are now doing.
