Status: offline 		Tibet is turning into a mess as the Chinese government steps up the offensive to quiet demonstrations...

What the hell was the IOC thinking when they gave the Olympics to China? What a mess this is going to be.

The same as when they gave the USA and USSR the Olympics?

Personally I would get rid of the Olmpics altogether, it soesn't so much bring different cultures together which is a positive but it allows childish politics such as when the US boycotted Moscow and the USSR boycotted Los Angeles.

When countries boycott businesses and are willing to for go financial advantages for causes, I'll start taking such calls as the boycotting of sporting events as above childish politics.

Status: offline 		I believe the IOC gave the olympics to Beijing both to recognise how far in from the cold China has come, and to encourage China to come in further, through the inevitable exposure of China to what we feel are progressive values.

Or it could all be about how much money the Chinese have amassed from manufacturing our goods, and the corresponding lack of wealth we have to host the games?

Nevertheless, we should prompt China to reform, but we have to be careful about how we do it - we have to go slowly and with encouragement. Hostility from our side will only serve to stunt and possibly turn back the progress made within China - blasting on in there to tell them theyre all wrong about everything and must change now is counterproductive. Yes there is a long way to go and there is little we can show approval for, but they are changing. Lets not risk the loss of whats been achieved so far and what could be achieved by further exposure to China of how we'd prefer them to function.

Status: offline 		I think I watched the Olympics once in my life when I was 14 or 16 or something.
Watching wealthy people's children (for the most part) compete against each other doesn't do a lot for me.

You forget the Olympics isn't set in the USA - the way they recruit athletes abroad typically does NOT depend on the university system, or on the wealth of the athletes' parents.

As a matter of fact, most athletes I know of come from relatively modest backgrounds.

There is some truth to that.  The international arena is a competitive one.  With the collapse of the Soviet Union it is inevitable that some nation will rise up to challenge American hegemony.  So long as there are nations among men, that will be the order of things.

Status: offline 		I am Taiwanese and extremely leery and suspect of China as anyone in the world. I though agree with Lady Ellen. I have traveled extensively in China and have seen firsthand just how much progress has been made and this in my opinion should be acknowledged.

This Tibet disgrace is though a good reminder of how far they still have to come and how much pressure the rest of the world should still apply to them. We can choose to work with them and help hopefully influence change in this area or we can pretend we are not vital on them for our economy and pretend to isolate them.

People are not going to see the Olympics and forget the problems. I would like to think the Olympics will bring more attention to these problems.

But to succeed in some of these sports, you go through years and years of training. A poor family has very little chance of making it. No matter what country they are from.

Guess where the best Russian athletes train? In the United States.

You have totally missed the point....

Practically every major Russian tennis player trained in the USA. Maria Sharapova has been training in Florida since she was 6 years old at a sports academy that costs $50,000 a year to attend.

And yes not only do many eastern bloc athletes train in the US but many coaches have come here... the reason why is because America's training facilities is much more advanced than the ones in the eastern bloc. Many in the former soviet union are obsolete.

As long as ordinary people think the venal, the greedy and the power hungry are the right people to run their country, we are going to have problems. Maybe such a retarded vision is a flaw in human make up. I'm optimistic that it doesn't always have to be the case because there have been cultures where different critierias have been used to assess someone's worthiness to be a leader. Sadly we in the west, who do have a modicum of choice within certain perameters, are pretty Neanderthal when it comes to choosing our leaders.
