As I pointed out, we in the west have a modicum of choice as to who leads us but we still manage to choose the venal, the greedy and the power hungry to lead us.
As for the cold war, the more secret documents that are released to the public the more they seem to indicate the west was the major problem and that most of the fear generated in the west was not from actual threats but propaganda deseminated by the west to get their own populations not to question their government's foreign policies.
