LaT, the way the world is now, with children being abducted out in bumfuck areas.

I would lock my doors and shor up my shit, even if I lived 1000 miles from civilization,
these days.

I currently live alone.
Who the hell can help me, when the bad guys come?

MzMia, what is often not reported, at least in the crimes in this part of the world, is that most crimes are commited by people that know the victim. Know their habits, know when to strike, where the easiest access is, even know the dogs. That is the kind of crime there is virtually no protection against. Sadly, the victims or the victims families, bear some of the responsibility for making bad judgements on who they hang out with, who they allow into their lives.

This is especially true of crimes against children and rape. Almost always it is either family or a friend of the family.

Oh LaT, you are so right.
The 19 year old daughter of one of my mothers friends,
was raped and murdered about 22 years ago.
I WILL NEVER FORGET THE DETAILS.
She was 19, had just had a baby was home living with her mother.
She let her next door neighbor in to use the phone or something, and he
raped and murdered her.
She grew up next door to the guy.
I don't open my door up to anyone, unless I want to.
I am very funny about that, I don't care who you are.
If you are not a good friend, that I invited over, I usually talk through the door.
I have my ways, we all have to make decisions.
I have to laugh my neice and nephew, live in D.C. and won't even open up the door for ME,

unless I tell them who I am.
They have been taught not to let ANYONE in that house, even a neighbor, especially
if their Mommy is not home.

Also, as this economy gets worse and worse.
And it is, as prices go sky high-and they are.

People are losing homes and jobs, and MANY are going to be
desperate.

I predict a surge in crime, as the recession deepens.

Crime is certainly going to be going up.

mhawk -> RE: shoring up- you and your stuff (3/16/2008 8:47:04 AM)

well let's see, where my family lives(not the one i live with),have the motion lights and so do all of their neighbors.last year did they help to deter any robberies?no.in fact more home robberies in their area has risen since everyone in their neighborhood got those lights. back in the late summer a string of 14 robberies in homes.all with motion lights.so i wouldn't put my money into those things since it's been proven to me they don't deter anything.

where i do live with my Lord and Mistress,we lock the doors and all the usual stuff.we have precations if(big if) there should be a break in.but we don't worry about it we've got good neighbors and we all notice if something isn't right in the neighborhood.

There is a reality program on one of the channels like TLC, the premise is that an experienced but reformed burglar is videotaped breaking into homes in order to show the homeowners just how vulnerable they truly are.

"it takes a thief"..love that show |!!

camille65 -> RE: shoring up- you and your stuff (3/16/2008 9:16:43 AM)

I do too GT [:D]. It always amazes me, the reaction of those that think they are secure but aren't.There is nothing that I own that cannot be replaced thanks to my homeowners insurance. Plus in the 40 years my private road has existed there has not been one reported burglary nor any vandalism. Sheesh maybe it's a good thing the housing market is [sm=goodnight.gif] , it means I'm stuck in a safe place for a long long time lol. I still have the urge to make a punji pit though..(and I really do have some headless dolls nailed to trees in my back woods hahaha) Wanna come over n play?[sm=banana.gif]

GreedyTop -> RE: shoring up- you and your stuff (3/16/2008 9:21:59 AM)

sounds like fun to me!! [:D][:D]

Last night, I slept with my front door open, as well as all the windows.
But I live at the end of a dead end street.  I have a neighbor in front of my house (the property has 3 bldgs - his house, mine, and a secure storage building), who keeps an eye on things. His schedule and mine are mostly opposite so we watch out for each other.

Mz Mia, I *will* let a stranger in to use the phone.
