Ok-  blame it on anything you want.   My thoughts are that violent crime is up. We are up against summer- where crime typically increases.

1. have you taken extra precautions. [ as compared to say 3 years ago]
2. if so, what  specifically are you doing to secure your home, your person, you valueables. ?
3. if you are doing nothing- why or why not.

sub4hire -> RE: shoring up- you and your stuff (3/15/2008 7:41:48 AM)

Lets see, I have a loaded gun in a place only I know on every level of the home.

Most of my neighbors..well all don't even lock their doors.  We do.  So we'd be the last house to be hit on the block.

We had Brinks in California, really doesn't seem to be a reason to have it here.  I went to a Ladies meeting last night...that should also help in the war against crime.  The ladies would make the call if need be.  Hell well worth the time spent.

FullCircle -> RE: shoring up- you and your stuff (3/15/2008 7:43:13 AM)

3.

All that we have in life isn't ours but the person whose name is on the credit card.

pahunkboy -> RE: shoring up- you and your stuff (3/15/2008 7:50:23 AM)

I guess I am spooked...as last night I tuned in on Bio tv.  they featured a serial killer.  too gross to post.   the one method he used gosh- i made sure my doors were locked.  i do lock my house all the time. i always have.

i do want to go further on the locks tho.

as for weapons- you wont find a bunch of knives in my kitchen. one time when i was "held" the dude took special notice as to the knives. i was able to ditch the guy.   that was an odd episode. it was hallarious when he took some niacin thinking it was a fun pill and got all flush- he thought he was dieing. lol

My mother should have written a book on this subject.
lol
One thing I will say is this, LIGHT can be a BIG security measure.
IF you own your own home, I would install flood lights all around the perimeter.
Those automatic lights that come on, when someone walks within 20 feet of your
door are a must have!
There are many inexpensive home alarm systems.
Even if you don't have one, you can put up a sign saying you do.
You can also put up a sign saying, BEWARE of dog. {again even if you don't have one}
Gates are always great!

I am a big believer in always securing the perimeter!
It is YOUR property and you have the right to set up booby traps if necessary.

Those gates with the barbed wire at the top, are nice also.
My mother had the basement windows bricked in, which is legal as long as no-one sleeps down there
{I think}.
Of course, bars on all the windows, etc.
Also, all entrance doors should have a gated door installed in front of the regular doors.
All the regular doors should be made of steel.
Good locks on all your doors!
An inexpensive club on the car, of course.
Well these were my 3 minute tips off my head!

Can you tell I live minutes from D.C.?
Laugh if you want, but our house was never burglarized and we lived there over 35 years, within walking distance
of S.E. Washington, D.C. {when D.C. used to have one
of the largest crime rates in America.}

Several of our neighbors, had break ins, but our house was fortified and not worth all the effort
it would take to get in it!

My mother even had an old barbed wire gate in front of the basement steps, lol
She had a few more things also, I just can't list them all.

On top of all this crap, she also had a gun.
Damn if I know where she got it from, she never used it.
By the way, my mother was a little school teacher! [:D]
Ahead of her time I always say!

slaveboyforyou -> RE: shoring up- you and your stuff (3/15/2008 11:03:39 AM)

I don't lock my doors most of the time when I leave.  They would just bust the window out or kick the door in, and I'd have to pay for that.  I only lock up at night when I am asleep.  Honestly my place has never been broken into.  I have neighbors that are home during the day, and they would notice strangers coming by.  I know they would, because they always ask when someone new comes over.  I have a 12 gauge shotgun loaded and ready to go when I am home.  So I dare anyone to try and break in when I'm  home.

pahunkboy -> RE: shoring up- you and your stuff (3/15/2008 12:00:48 PM)

the neighbors here do notice things and willsay something. i made it clear to them when i moved in - that i would participate in the same.

most burglars will move on to the easiest target.  un-used locks arent much good.   when i was in between 2 houses it was harder to mind the stuff.

a room motion detector is good.

a buddy of mine had a home invasion happen to him some years ago. it was a freak thing. anyhow he was so upset during that- he had a heart attack.  he stayed living in the same house even now 10 years later.

i have seen those metal gates- i havent had to use any- they could draw attetnion in an unwanted way.

at one time floor plans were easliy looked up at teh county bldg.  as to a dog sign-a dog dish could have a bigger impact.  if there is no sign of a dog then no dog.

yet if it works for you- cool

popeye1250 -> RE: shoring up- you and your stuff (3/15/2008 12:49:13 PM)

I have about 5 handguns stashed strategically throughout the condo all loaded.
I have motion-detector lights in the back for outside.
Deadbolt lock in front door that scrapes against the hasp so it would be very difficult if not impossable to pick.
The front of all the buildings are well lighted as is the parking lot areas.
I'm up late so most nights I do a walk through of the parking lot.
All the neighbors keep an eye out for one another too.
And we have two ret. Corrections Officers one from N.Y. one from Conn, a ret. Baltimore City P.O. , a  ret. New York state trooper and me a ret. Federal Law Enforcement Officer.

Wow I guess I won't be smoking a doobie wich ya popeye? [;)] Another wow, MzMia damn. Are the GirlScouts safe selling cookies where you live? Quite a comprehensive list! Not too sure if booby-traps are legal though, but interesting (and deviant) thoughs arise! sbfy homeowners or rental insurance is a good thing to have as are neighbors that watch unless you run around naked like me and don't want watched. And hunky hon, maybe you shouldn't watch so much creepy stuff. I think the tv and internet give a skewed view of the world because it is easier to sell awful stuff over good stuff. As for me?I don't even own a key to any of my doors. There is a big doggy though and I also have a nifty bbgun somewhere. [:D] I love living out here where you simply don't have any kind of traffic of people. Going to hate leaving it. Jeez I'm going to have to carry keys one day! Now I can't stop thinking of booby-traps. Punji pits.. snares.. beheaded dolls nailed to trees..

Is violent crime up? I haven't seen the statistics.

It seems to me that anyone booby-trapping the yard and keeping loaded weapons in every room has already been robbed--whether or not they have ever interacted with a criminal.

The two break-ins I've heard of in my area in the 20+ years I've lived here both resulted in the theft of guns. But then, the fact that guns are to be found in a majority of local households may have helped limit that overall number.

Taintedblood -> RE: shoring up- you and your stuff (3/15/2008 6:25:25 PM)

hopefully i wont get broken in to im really paranoid about everything being locked however there are units near the back of my house that are occupied during the day so I don't think it wil get broken into during the day, however, my dad once watched his neighbours house get broken into and watched things being removed - and didn't realise they where being broken in too

Maya2001 -> RE: shoring up- you and your stuff (3/15/2008 8:16:37 PM)

No locking doors or gun here but having 4 dogs makes for an excellent security system  [:D]

Darn... and I thought I might slip over there un-noticed...

pahunkboy -> RE: shoring up- you and your stuff (3/16/2008 5:13:00 AM)

Im not sure why I posted this.  I have too many 1st floor windows.  Recently I tightened up the doors. Ild have to think-- hiding stuff in a matress -that is where a burglar looks.   on a break in- the idea is to be out with in seconds....  the longer the burglar is in- the higgher chance of being caught.

camille65 -> RE: shoring up- you and your stuff (3/16/2008 5:25:31 AM)

There is a reality program on one of the channels like TLC, the premise is that an experienced but reformed burglar is videotaped breaking into homes in order to show the homeowners just how vulnerable they truly are.

Have I taken precautions I did not take three years ago. Nope, in fact I am more lax than three years ago. At that time my housemate was still full time military running around the middle east getting shot at and stuff. I had always promised that person that when I was here alone I would try and remember to lock the doors at night. Now I don't lock them much at all.

I don't worry about securing my home. I live in Iowa, rural Iowa, with the only human neighbours being farmers and or hillbillies. They wouldn't know what to do with half of my shit! My jewelry is always kept locked up, mostly to remind me to put it away instead of leaving it in stupid places to get lost. Any guns in the house are locked up because they have value, not kept as protection.

I refuse to live in fear of some random freak. Plus, I have always lived with dogs. The 10# minpin/papillion mix is the best alarm system in the world. The two 80# german shepherd mixes are her enforcement brigade.

Actually, we lived in a very nice suburban area.
It was fairly quiet, and you would THINK crime free.
The neighbors are friendly, children can play outside during the day,
riding bikes, etc.
BUT, the point is/was we lived about 20 minutes from one of the poorest,
and crime ridden areas of D.C.
In this area, people living in million dollar homes can be robbed.
Got it?
In the district, you can live in Georgetown in a home that costs 3 million dollars,
and be robbed right outside of your home.
It is very common to have expensive homes located blocks from
low income housing developments or apartments in the city.
Better safe, than sorry, life is different in the big city.

MzMia -> RE: shoring up- you and your stuff (3/16/2008 6:45:07 AM)

LaT, the way the world is now, even children are snatched off bikes in
the middle of bumfuck areas, many people look for people in remote areas
to terrorize.
What was that movie in the 60s?
In Cold Blood? Those people lived in the middle of nowhere.

I would lock my doors and shor up my shit, even if I lived 1000 miles from civilization,
these days.

It is my right to do all I can to feel safe and sleep well at night.
I rather be safe, than sorry.
I am thinking of new security measures at this time.
Are electric fences illegal?
[;)]

christine1 -> RE: shoring up- you and your stuff (3/16/2008 6:48:47 AM)

i'm renting at the moment and there is a night time patrol where i am.  when i move later this year into my own home i will make sure i have good locks and i'll be getting a big dog.  i'm thinking about taking a gun course and buying myself a firearm of some sort.

i can't let myself get too worked up over fears of a break in or home invasion, after my divorce i was terrified of it and i won't be anymore, it's too much of a burden to carry around that fear all the time.  i figure i'll be as aware as i can and get along with the neighbors so we can all look out for each other.
