From today's Independent newspaper (yes, I actually bought a newspaper!)

Mehdi Kazemi fled from Iran to the UK in 2005, and claimed asylum, after his boyfriend was arrested and hanged; homosexuality is a serious offence in Iran. Before his execution, the boyfriend was "interrogated" and named Mehdi as his boyfriend - or accessory to a serious offence in Iranian legal terms.

The UK government rejected his claim for asylum, whereupon, fearing for his life once deported to Iran, Mehdi fled to Holland. The Dutch have now also rejected his claim and he is due to be sent back to the UK, from where he will be deported back to Iran, where an arrest warrant is already in place for him and he is likely to be hanged.

Now, how is it, when the laws here prevent us from returning truly dangerous foreign offenders (terrorists, rapists, murderers etc) to countries where their life might be endangered, or where they might be tortured, that our government can seriously consider the deportation of this young man who has done nothing but fulfil the requirements to be considered a refugee who needs and should get asylum here. 

It just baffles me.

Still, all is not yet lost; that "awful" EU has to have its say yet. The case is to be debated in the EU parliament tomorrow, and its possible that the European Court of Human Rights or the European Court of Justice may yet intervene.

If the Iranian boy came to the UK legally (or has went thru the legal process of becoming a UK citizen), then all should be well.   Your sexual orientation should not be considered when you break a law.  WTF is this world coming to?  This is rediculous.

I suppose Mexico is waiting to see how England handles this case.  If they keep the boy to prevent his execution, I can see Mexico, Cuba and Puerto Rico passing anti-homosexuality laws and all the illegal aliens will claim they are gay so us stupid Americans can swallow it and let them stay here.  Talk about opening a can of fucking worms!  What a joke.

Europe and the plight of asylum seekers is not a pretty subject. Demagogic governments have made immigration rules so stringent that this type of thing happens every day all over Europe. "Fortress Europe" indeed (that was the title of my final thesis). I hope the Euro Court of Human Rights reviews that man's case in a favourable light. Otherwise, he's toast.

Asylum seekers frequently don't have paperwork to travel with. Without a passport, it's pretty impossible to come through any port of entry in north america.

cept canada...we let anyone in.  they dont even check papers if you take greyhound from usa for instance...the last time i went through they didnt even check our baggage coming in from michigan.

Just remind me if you would, how many thousand miles away from Iran is the UK? Israel's a lot closer ennit ?
Are not asylum seekers supposed to aim for the nearest haven ?

Just wonderin' if our soft touch welfare system has anything to do with the choice of the UK.

I assume you know that an ex Taliban "charity worker" from Afghanistan claimed asylum in the UK because the Taliban were no longer in power there and he said his future was at risk

He could have gone to Greece, Italy, Switzerland, Belgium, Germany, France, Spain Portugal even Holland first, bit no lets plough a furrow to the home of the handout...the UK.

Cry me a River!!! Germany as it is  today was created with German blood and Gernan iron, they dont owe jack shit to Iran, same goes for the rest of Europe. The boat can only hold so many people! Same goes for the rest of Europe.

As I have stated there are many asylum seekers world wide from the GLBT community. http://gayswithoutborders.wordpress.com/  It is Illegal to be Gay in 90 countries. Some give the Death penalty for simply being Gay. ( not to mention the torure they recive to name the names of thier gay friends and partners)

Many in EU, England and Canada are upset when these Gay asylum seekers come to thier country.. they see them as trying to take a free ride.. or as "Illegals" I have read it all in postings here, and in political boards from those countires.

If you are in those countries and you have people voicing such concerns I would hope you would have the comon decentcy to slap the fucking snot out of them.. and once unconcious... take gay porn style pictures of them, ship them to Iran.. with the pictures stappled to thier shirts. ( them well drugged up for the trip.. sans passport ) and let them see how it bloody feels.

Because else where they get killed.... there families get killed. thier children get raped..

is that hard to understand? The answer most westerners think is well then just be discrete... That doesnt work. If they see you living together or a rumor is started then you are dead. If you have sought asylum before and you are deported back.. there is no "being discrete" you are a "Known Homosexual" do not pass go, do not collect $200 just be killed.

I wonder if these were Jewish or black people being persicuited if they would be turned away the same way... " well dont go to your synagogue, or have some white friends do things for you" Would they be told " That is just the way it is.. and you have to live with it"?

Simply saying well they arent from my country.. and I am not gay so it isnt my problem makes no sense to me.

I would hope everyone in the _Human Race_ to which we all belong would want to fight injustice in any form. People are literaily being killed simply for being gay. On the off chance they do escape they are being shipped back to be killed and told to "well, just keep a low profile.. we know your govt. knows we are shipping you back, and when you will arrive, but good luck ol chap!"

If he was fighting a different type of oppresion in his country I bet he would be safer. After all who wants more fags in thier country.

It just makes me sick.
