Martina Navratilova has retaken Czech nationality in protest at the politics of George W Bush.

She chose to wait until the end of his term for that? Being as she fled to this country to escape the trappings of her own and become a gazillionaire star, I suggest we don't let her back in when she changes her mind.

And what happened to all the Hollywood'ites who promised to leave this country if GWB was elected? Were they too comfortable in their own luxuries to do so. Funny how money motivates over principle. Alec Baldwin (who later flip-flopped about having said that), Robert Altman, Pierre Salinger, Barbara Streisand, Eddie Vedder, Tim Robbins, Susan Sarandon, Whoopi Goldberg, Ed Asner, Martin Sheen (unconfirmed), Sean Penn... (reportedly, Salinger was the only one who made good on his promise).

Johnny Depp lives in France, making great US dollar while not only criticizing the politics of this country, but calling our citizenry "idiots".

Hopefully she'll really "protest" and renounce her U.S. citizenship and not be able to get back into the country.

But as a "naturalised" U.S. citizen she could lose her U.S. citizenship for doing such a thing as "defecting" or taking on another country's citizenship.

Thankfully, popeye, the law doesn't make separate provisions for naturalised US citizens. Thankfully, freedom of speech isn't a special right only attributed to "real americans".

Otherwise, it's not freedom of speech at all, if there are negative consequences for thought crime. I mean... think about it! You defend the right of the KKK to spew venom and racist hatred, because they're US born... but not the right of Navratilova to express her disapproval of Bush?

Kittensol, you're putting words in my mouth.
I support the right of all "hate groups" to speak so that The People can see what they're all about. They'll be doomed by their message that way.
Their enemy is the light of day.
As for Martravola or however it's spelled she has the right to voice her opinions.
But if she defects as a naturalised U.S. citizen she can end up losing her U.S. citizenship.

I have a better idea, let's make Bush leave.

The Berlin Wall fell down in '89, and I don't think there were many cases of "defection" from this side of the world to the East. It's an interesting phenomenon that the shift has made this situation possible.

As for stripping her of her nationality... It's not a provision that's in the law if somebody moves away from this country and takes another nationality.

That's not what Martina's done. From what I understand, she took Czech nationality again. She didn't surrender her american citizenship.
