I have to admit to being a person who likes gossip. I just like information. Gossip as second hand information usually requires confirmation, but in most instances that isn't hard to get. Also, in most instances, gossip isn't malicious. It's about people you know who got new jobs, broke up with so-and-so, did this hilarious/stupid thing at a party, etc etc etc. Not everyone can have a livejournal, so friends have to help disseminate information about other friends, sometimes even when we don't want them to. That's just what being part of a community is :) The malicious gossip is usually easily noticeable for what it is. To wit, it is usually completely vague. "That Dom is abusive!" Really? How so? "He used to beat a friend of mine." Well, how? Did he give her a black eye, put her in the hospital with internal bleeding, what? They never know details. On rare occasions you meet one of those chronic liars who will just make up a story, but those details are easily verified or not. I'm pretty out and open about everything in my life (and I have a livejournal) so I don't think people gossip about me much because everybody already knows everything of interest. If I do hear about people gossiping about me, I think "People are talking about ME? I feel so special!"
