Google really IS your friend - 3/8/2008 8:08:28 AM

I know I'm going to get blasted for this.  I'm sure the flames are going to be quite abundant (just bring marshmellows).  Still, I just have to say it.

I almost typed out this post yesterday.  The thought occurred to Me after noticing how many questions were being asked about basic, and I do mean BASIC terms used in relation to BDSM.  The "What does topping from the bottom mean?" immediately springs to mind.  I probably shouldn't call out that particular example, because there are others.  Actually, of all of the threads out there that are focused on terms, the only one that was remotely above the basic level, was boijen's thread on the term "boi".

As an experiment, I took two minutes yesterday, and typed a few things into google.  Guess what?  I got definitions for every term that was asked about, and a couple that I could draw from memory that were entry level questions in terms in the lifestyle.  I even tried some of the more repetitive questions asked.  I got answers for everything I put in.  I'm not kidding here, folks.  Two minutes.

Now, let Me specifically state that there was a reason that I used google, and not the search function here.  I did this little experiment from the perspective of a person new to the site, who might not be aware that the function exists.  I can understand that, being a computer twit Myself.  I figured that was the easiest way anyone new could research a term.

Because I am rather old fashioned, I also went to My bookshelf to see what was readily available in print.  I chose three titles:

"The Loving Dominat" by John Warren
"SM 101" by Jay Wiseman
"The Art of Sensual Female Dominance" by Claudia Varrin

Being as I didn't want this to be, in any way, a gender based experiment, I went against that last choice, and instead went with:

"Fetish" by David Barnwell.

In all of these books, I could find the very same terms I had typed up in google in the respective glossaries.  (This was not true for the term "boi".)  I do admit that this did take a bit longer than the two minutes using google, and I obviously had the titles on hand.  This, in itself, makes google a more friendly choice.

Ok.  The point of all of this.

Google really is your friend, people.  If you've stumbled on this site, we do welcome you and we are glad that you are here.  However, could you, please, save us the time and the trouble of doing your research for you?  It isn't hard.  Google really is your friend.  Don't especially expect every person of CM to be the same.  Take a little initiative for yourself and don't expect everything handed to you on a silver platter.  We were all new once, but ffs, don't think you are entitled to have everyone hold your hand while all of your answers are provided for you.

<Takes a long deep breath.>

Thank you.

Edited for a spelling mistake.  I'm sure there are others.

Lol, good rant, I think it depends on the question, I use google to do research and then here to find out about it on a personal level, thats the differance for me. I quite like to see how people apply it themselves, I dont like the term TFTB but if i just looked up the pure definition wouldnt explain why i personally dont like the term, that has come from how I have seen people use it. I do get a bit weary of the general questions what does ... mean etc but i do find that often the way that the question develops can be really informative.

Don't we have a FAQ thread also?  I seem to recall something like that on my Welcome to Collarme email...

LadyPact, my hometown hero. Tell the newbies we don't take any 20 questions crap around this town. Of course if a beautiful newbie submissive has a question or two, I will mentor her.

I believe newbies posting and reposting, "What's the difference between a sub and a slave?" is a good thing.

So much Internet material about those terms is CastleRealm wankeristic, subs have limits but slaves don't, ownership is the highest level of romantic consciousness... I'll stop before we group hurl.  The problem with getting info off the Internet is that you can never tell the qualifications or motivations of the source.

With a message board like this one, on the other hand, after reading maybe 10 posts by someone, I have a pretty good idea if they've been there and done that, or if they are just making shit up.  I luvvvvvvvv watching when a netgeek pronounces that slaves have no limits period the end, and people in real-life relationships set the record straight.

Besides, you have to know the phrases to use the search engine.  And, stupid me, I plumb forgot to type in "clown sex" and "urethral centipeding" yesterday.

I typed in "Topping from the Bottom" on Google.

I came up with four entries:

The top entry was a person's blog, in which I had to cruise through the person's vacation and, after an entire page, complete with photos, I never saw reference to the phrase.

The second was a link to "Definition-of.com", which gave a 7 word description:  To control the scene from the bottom.

The third was an article by Polly Peachum:  Defining the BDSM Lifestyle: The Essential Prerequisite, in which we have Ms. Peachum saying there are really two BDSM lifestyles, and then she goes on to describe three variations, according to her.

The fourth was an article by Margaret Kerr:  The Bottom Topping Submissive: Who Holds the Crop?  In this, Ms. Kerr describes that such behavior is inappropriate, yet goes on to say that one reason such behavior might occur is because the bottom is being trained by the top to do so.  Huh.

While I can understand there are frustrations with basic questions being asked that could indeed be Googled, I can also understand someone being new to BDSM wanting to ask a group of BDSMers something he/she wants info on.  Especially when there are so many variations of styles and definitions.  Google is good but engaging in a discussion with others can be better, in some cases.

lol, I guess some people don't really want to go to the trouble of looking on Google,(or any other engine for that matter.) Though that amuses me because they would get the answears alot quicker, then here on the message boards.

This rant is not really helpful. There are newbies that sign on to this message board every day and need/want basic information. Yes, these threads are possibly "boring" to those of us with more than a basic understanding of WIITWD, but this site is for everyone interested in BDSM, not just for those who are knowledgeable about it. I tend to skip the threads about terms unless I am in the mood to point out how the newbie can get oodles of info from past threads. I do this to be helpful, not condescending.

The point is that some people are unaware of how many times a question has been asked and answered.... so being frustrated with it is not really productive (at least for me it isn't, and i have been annoyed by some of the repeated things that get asked around here). I just gave it a good thinking over and decided that perhaps I spent too much time posting here to get bent out of shape by such things (and I am being completely self reflective about my behavior, not insinuating that this applies to other people who post here).

Is WIITWD making up abbreviations, you’d think so some times?

Is it really that difficult to just click the X and move on?

Yano, 'elders' like you that make me glad I am not a newbie just entering into all of this.

If you want to find out what it means you can search for it on the top right hand corner, start a thread like some people have, or you can read my answer below

What It Is That We Do... and it has been used around here since before I logged into CM, and yes it is made up, although it is in dispute as to who made it up....

If you don't want to answer a newbie's questions, then don't. Some of us don't mind answering it.

Besides to use tftb for example, a straightforward definition of the bottoming attempting to dictate play, doesn't allow for any emotional nuances. It doesn't mention that some tops like that kind of feedback and others go apeshit. It doesn't mention the interplay wherein an s type could ask for something knowing that the asking allows the top to chuckle evilly and do something else, and that the s type might well only pretend to tftb to give the top that moment of laughter and herself the thrill of hearing it.

None of this stuff is that simple. Because it's being done by people and people are not simple.

I think your point is well made, LadyPact.
It behooves us all (noobs or not ) to do our own homework. It's always interesting to me to find out something unexpected ( unlooked for) while in the process of looking up something else. It's a wonderful learning process.
Also, being new here myself, I think the forums are rich with info and insights of all kinds. Sometimes, it pays to lurk and learn.

So to rephrase it slightly...

Is what it is that we do making up abbreviations, you'd think so sometimes?
