Keep in mind you lose value when you take them off the lot.

my group here does a play slave auction annually which is fun and you get to play with someone new, but as for true slaves being sold...i believe ti does happen in certain area's but it is kept under wraps for obvious reasons. even if the slave was completely happy and loved her / his new Master/Mistress you know very well some vanilla person would step in and try to play savior and say it was bad so for good reason it cant be all out their and open

Slavery is illegal in many countries but not all.

Just as a point of curiosity, I was under the impression that slavery was formally illegal everywhere in the world, although tacitly accepted in some places. Do you really know of countries where slavery is explicitly legal? If so, which ones? I might have to consider relocating...

Incidentally, I agree with you completely about the complexities that would arise if a member of a slave-holding society moved to a country where slavery was illegal, and brought the human chattels along. However, I think I would want local laws to take precedence, just on the principle of doing as the Romans do (well, the Romans did have slaves, but you know what I mean!).

Off the top of my head, no, I can't name a specific country. However in my comparative slavery classes I remember discussing countries in Africa and Asia in the 1990s where slavery was still legal as well as countries where while technically not legal it is actively overlooked by authorities either for cultural or financial regions.

We need to remember that even when something is illegal that does not mean that that activity does not happen in said society. Think about it logically, if it didn't happen then why would you need laws against it? Rape is illegal in the USA and yet rapes happen every day.

So I'm not surprised and in fact would require proof that slavery didn't exist in a society simply because I'd assume that it did, legally or illegally.

Perhaps I'm just very jaded but I assume that human beings will do the worst most of the time so little surprises me in this world.

I had a nice, long discussion with an ICE agent about the actual slave trade in the US after watching "The Pet" together. It really does exist. Most are brought in as cheap labor, others are brought in for sex. Almost all have paid for the voyage themselves, not knowing what was on the other end. For a lot of them, what they get is better than what they had, sadly.

There are countries in the world where actual slavery still exists, not the lifestyle type we all indulge in.  I'm sure you can buy slaves in those places to this day.

I was talking to an acquaintence once who had three BDSM slaves at the time and he, knowing I like interracial BDSM, casually mentioned that slaves can still be bought in India.  When I told him that she'd be free when I brought her over to America, he said "you would not have to tell HER that."  Needless to say that sent a chill down my spine, and I have not talked much with him since.  Granted, I like having BDSM slaves, but having an actual slave is not for me.

To everyone here:

1. I thank each and everyone for all the input and insight that made this thread a 1k+ hitter in less than four pages.

2. I meant 'slavery' in a BDSM sense, not as in 'against the will' or 'debt' slavery. I have no intention of captivating
any female against her will. I have no desire of enslaving a male--period. :-|

The book that I read--many moons ago, and to which I was thinking about when initiating this thread, illustrated a female slave being trained by a male Dominant all the way through the book. At the last chapter, she, with tears in her eyes, was sold to another owner--just like a puppy. Cash exchanged hands, property--the slave--changed hands. Apparently, being sold was not a 'hard limit' or the slave's agent did not negotiate the contract effectively.

I was just wondering if the books and magazine articles I read about this matter were complete fiction, or if they did indeed portray a real part of life.

Was it a "Marketplace" novel you read? Laura Antoniou has told me that she gets emails and questions about whether or not she's writing about some real organization all the time and she says "Not that I'm aware of" in reply.

Beyond her novels, there are many novels and short stories with such subjects because it's a hot fantasy for many people -- some of my stories have the auction/training subjects even though these are femdom/malesub in nature. Be careful of what type of book you are reading, fiction can pretend to be fact because that makes it even hotter and a bigger seller for some folks.

Given that slavery is illegal in many places, I would think that such an organization must remain highly secretive if it wishes to survive and to protect it's membership. Thus I doubt anyone who would respond to you on a site as public as Collarme would be a member of such a group. Someone who claimed they were would raise red flags of scam artist in my mind.

I could personally see arranging for my slave to move on if I pass away but I can't see myself selling someone I've invested that much time and energy in no matter the price. Besides which, as long as he's mine he can be earning money too and I still keep ownership so I don't see the value in selling in a BDSM sense. Again, it runs a legal risk to ever do that, a risk that I personally believe is too high for my family.
