I got my tax bill.    I see it isnt detailed/itemized as it is in Chicago.    I dont undertand mills and assessments.

Noteworthy  is "city debt service"  and "county debt service"

It should be completely illegal as a tax?  Well, that is My comment.
Now for an answer.
You are best served by calling your county assessor's office and getting the straight dope from them.  We all have different rules of assessment, and there should be someone in the office who is willing (albeit not happy?) to explain the breakdown for you in your local area.  While you are at it, you should check to find the rules and regs for a challenge.  If you object in the proper manner, often your property tax bill will be adjusted.  At least in My neck of the woods.

Roger,
Is your taxes more or less than when you were in Chicago?  Ours are 3 times the amount of our house in California.
Its amazing, how each state does its taxes...ours here are only going up and up.

Hey Sub   Remember Prop 13 froze your taxes in Cali so they can't raise them

My house is in foreclosure due to my divorce.  I just learned, once the bank takes it over and sells it, any loss they incur on it will hit me as income, and I will be taxed on it.  Filing for taxes next year should be interesting as a result.

ownedgirlie, I just read that an act that was signed into law recently makes forgiven loans arising from foreclosure non-taxable (just enacted in December).  Double check on that with your tax professional but you should be okay (except for the whole bad mark on your credit).

Since it is arising out of a divorce you might look at Chapter 7, too.

It depends on the loan - Recourse versus Non Recource.  Mine does not qualify for the new tax relief bill, unfortunately.

Chapter 7 is an option, although I'm trying to avoid it right now.  We shall see.  If the house doesn't sell by March 12, the lender gets the keys.  Time will tell...The tax issue surprised me, though.

"Mils" = "thousands" (it's in the dictionary).

City and County is typically sewer and garbage...but I couldn't speak for your area.

(Welcome to land ownership....get used to it...or, you can rent).

Could be sewar, 911 services, other county and city public services... There should be a billing number on the bill, and you can call them and have them break it down for you.

There are people out there who will take the house off your hands and help you avoid foreclosure if there's suffivient equity in it. Look in the Sunday classifieds, etc. for "I/we buy houses". The web, too, and most real estate agents know someone who does that. Hurry.

Yeah I mean how DARE they tax you on your property?  The schools and township services should be paid for in sugar plums and dancing fairy dollars.

Thanks, Hippie.  The problem I had was that both ex and I, being on the deed and loan, have to be in agreement on the sale price.  I've been screaming to lower the price since July (as has my realtor) and he only agreed to it last month.  We're hpping for a short-sale now and waiting for the lender's approval.

Didn't mean to hijack pahunkboy's thread with this, sorry.  I was just surprised at the loss/income tax.

Fun stuff!

Wow, good point! I mean obviously we must tax in fairy dollars, as there are no other methods of taxation.

Right, well as long as our electorate keeps voting for assholes who say things like "Read my lips--no new taxes," townships and school boards are going to figure out some other way to collect those fairy dollars they need.

..I DID dispute the assessment.  And won. They did tell me it could be the next year to tabulate.  2 bills come a year-and not 1/2 and  1/2.

Chicago taxes are   5 times what mine are...but then home prices are cheap[er]  here.    So  if this same house was there and worth $400k  then the tax would be higher.

The bitty neighbor  shall mind her own business.  She pisses me  off.

I appreciate the police and services are a luxury that all must pay for.  Police are under-paid.

I dont wish to build school as big as malls tho.

Based on the capital crises the "debt service" portion  of the tax  could go up alot.  hmmm-  "fuel surcharge" not there YET.

I fully expect to pay something for the public services.
