As a jew i understand the bible and its interpretations to be lessons and stories to teach. Not absolute in its truth,When i hear the bible, i hear the torah. Chanted in its ancient way. the hebrew in the torah has accents above each syllable. This shows the reader how to chant the sounds so its sound the same as the person who chanted it 2 thousand years ago. I feel the tradition of my people through this. This way of chanting is called Trope. My sister and her son who was bar motzvahed last week spent months learning this ancient form of telling the stories.

Hearing it in hebrew and its interpretations called the Mishna and Mariv which interprets the lesons and laws are very facinating. I am not a religious person but I have incredible respect for it. It is not King james version.

The bit that really fucks me off is the part in the New Testament where Goddy makes woman out of a bit of man's ribcage.

Especially now that we know female is the default setting for human beings.

That sort of anatomical thing would be pretty early on in the OLD Testament (testament, lay your hand on my sack and swear an oath).

Maybe give it another quick read thru, slick.

For me its mostly the Old Testament thats offensive.  The killing of innocent people whose only crime was not to be Jewish.  The ongoing slaughter of animals to atone for sins bothers me too.

There is a bit in there about if your neighbour works on a Sunday, they must be put to death.

If you did so you would certainly find yourself in a court of law which would not  accept this as a defense. Yet, before you can testify you must swear to be truthful while holding your right hand on a bible?  Ironic.

Thanks Greedy! Whats really amazing is how all those 13 year old get down and dance. They really know how to dance. My nephews do the moonwalk! The new fad is all the girls in their fancy dresses and white bobby sox they bring with. They take off their shoes and dance in sox. All night!

We just have to see those texts for what they really are, relics of times past, when people were trying to make sense of a lot of things without the hindsight of scientific knowledge and suchlike, tales and legends. Like we said, these texts aren't really offensive - it's what is done in their name that is.

Other than in defense. that is not my impression of the old testament. However, your version, does make my people look bad. If you want to read the real old testament, pick up a copy of the torah that translates the hebrew. With the hebrew on one side and the english on the other. This is the text it was written in.

All this makes me wonder how it is that  Evangelical Xstians can justifiy belonging to a religion of compassion when they so frequently lack a modicum of kindness towards their less fortunate brethren.

Tantriqu -> RE: What if anything in the Bible do you find offensive? (3/2/2008 7:25:07 AM)

Sigh, where do I start?
Where I can keep slaves only from neighbouring countries? [loved a couple from My own and a few from Europe]
That I should stone you to death if you wear clothes of more than one material? [cotton-wool blend, BONK! (are there any WOMEN here?)]
That I should kill the groom standing by the altar because he's wearing glasses?
Lot allowing his daughters to be gang-raped...'

Too many.
But I'll end on a cheery note:

However, the Bible is pro-fisting:
'And my beloved put in his hand by the hole of the door, and my bowels were moved for him.'
And it's all about a man's love for the church:  suuuure it is.

I agree.  I don't find the bible offensive, but I also don't find it to be a useful guide for my life.  I do have a problem with people who constantly spout verse though, especially when they don't understand the meaning of context or historical reference.

I find literally all "formal" religions offensive at some level and opt for personal spirituality.

some are "God's Chosen People"

As a matter of fact anyone who survived the Deluge (and until now) belongs to the chosen people. (Those not chosen are dead.)

My Frisian ancestors were chosen people. They were protected from the Deluge in one of them huge ships - presumably quite a bit larger than Noah's tub - and after the Deluge they were transported to the future Frisian homelands.

No, but I do know two of the incarnations of the last god of the jews (the Lord is my Shepherd). I also know personally some incarnations of some of the other gods.

No, but I suppose that I can get you the autograph of one Shepherd god incarnation.

Yes. I see him about once a month. He visited me last Tuesday and brought me some food, a sip of whisky, and a lot of tv-series.

As a Christian I am not offended by the Old Testament it show's a history, possibly tainted by personal views as is the New Testament, which shows the beginning of how Christianity has affected the world.  The only thing I hate about the bible is how people pick and chose passages to fit their political views they want others to live their way.
